The Three Ethical Dilemmas What Chiquita Faced

1. Before AUC became a designated “foreign terrorist organization”, the ethical dilemma Chiquita faced was that whether it should pay the protection money to the paramilitary. At the time when paying money to paramilitary has not yet become a felony,  it was the Chiquita’s choice to decide whether to pay them or not. If Chiquita chose not to pay the paramilitary, it will suffer the risk that employees in its company may be killed and they have to abandon their profitable enterprise of growing bananas. However, if Chiquita comprise to pay the protection money, it will indirectly facilitate the rampage of AUC’s atrocities. Under this circumstance, Chiquita was trapped and had to make a decision that which one is more important: business profit or resisting atrocity. Finally, Chiquita decides to pay the protection money to retain its business, while sacrifice the peace of the region and the benefits of people there.

2. At the time the case was written, the ethical dilemma Chiquita faced was that whether it should admit its role as a facilitator of atrocity and its responsibility to compensate the victims of the paramilitary. After the US government made financial assistance to paramilitary a felony, it is obvious that Chiquita’s behaviour of paying protection money is illegal. On one hand, Chiquita admitted its mistake by stopping the payments, selling subsidiary and pleading guilty to a felony. However, on the other hand, it tried to get rid of its responsibility by claiming that it missed the government’s announcement. Moreover, CEO of Chiquita, Aguirre, openly declared that they are victim rather than facilitator and they are saving lives. He also denies their responsibility to compensate the victimized people by saying that those who pull the trigger are exactly the responsible ones.

3. For me, if I came across this situation, I would not pay the protection money. First, though paying protection money can help to maintain the business, it is immoral for that it sacrifices others’ safety as well as benefits. Second, it can never retain for a long time. Paying money to guerrillas can only protect the company for some time. Given that the region is very chaotic because of the murderous group, it absolutely will draw attention from the public and the international community some day. When that day comes, every thing will be exposed in public; measures will be took and the reputation of the company will also be imperiled. Third, it will encourage the atrocity in that region. Therefore, in the long run, paying protection money actually is not an advisable strategy. I will choose to expose the situation in that area by all kinds of means. For example, I will introduce the media to pay attention to the chaos in that region. Although it may be a little bit dangerous, I believe it is the best way to radically solve the issue of atrocity. After everything is settled, it will also provide a better environment for the enterprise.

If, unfortunately, I paid protection money and my behaviour was designated as a felony, I would not try to get rid of my responsibility. The first thing I will do is to openly admit my mistake and then stop financing the paramilitary group. Next I will objectively face my role in facilitating the atrocity and ask for forgiveness from those victimized family. Finally, I will take the responsibility to compensate those victimized one through practical actions. In my point of view, using all kinds of excuses to get rid of responsibility is the worst means when confronting the public. The public knows what is right and what is wrong, therefore chicanery has no any meaning. Confession and repentance are the best compensations for mistakes and the best means to win the forgiveness of those victimized family. In a word, bravely and sincerely admit mistakes and redouble efforts to compensate it.
