Along with the popularization of computers, more and more children begin to be hooked on video games, which oppositely brings certain influence on them. Dave is such an example. Dave is the fifth-grade student in the key primary school. He is excellent in character and learning and holds the post of class leader. However, recent months he becomes short-spoken. When his classmates make a very little mistake, Dave would be very angry. What’s worse, he always shouts and fights towards his parents and even his neighbors. This troubles his parents and teachers a lot and they don’t understand what on earth happens to Dave whose daily activity seems very normal. Later, under the help of the psychologist, all of people find the answer that Dave has secretly played the violent video games more than one year. Now his mind has been occupied by violence in utter disorder so that certain mental obstacles occur. Then Dave can’t distinguish the reality from the video games distinctly. Finally he has to drop out so as to receive related treatment.
From the above demonstration, it can clearly show that video games do cause children certain behavior problems. Within the internet which is the magic world, it is full of all kinds of information and seduction. All of these make children easily addicted to the video games. Once accidentally getting to those games, they would often enjoy themselves so much as to forget to leave. Gradually they would be bewildered and at a loss. Besides, the world of playing video games is very visional. Thus staying in such a world for a long time could let children hard to locate their own real roles (Brockmyer, 2015). Thus they may behave very differently from the realistic life. For instance, an introverted child who doesn’t talk much in reality may be very humorous and talkative when playing video games (Brown, 2014) . At the same time, within the world of video games, because people don’t need to meet each other, some words they dare not say regularly and try to constrain would be spoken out freely. Hence playing video games could fully expose and release children deep psychological needs and desires. Then the result that the decline of self-discipline ability would be brought by those kinds of self-indulgence (Brusso & Orvis, 2013). When children are obsessed with such relaxation, their normal life and study can’t continue as well. As for Dave, when receiving treatment, he says that playing video games lets him gradually become mad and irritable. Most of the time, he just can’t remember his own real character. In addition, although Dave behaves well in the daily study and life, he feels really tired since the pressure and oppression from parents, classmates and teachers makes him hardly breathe. How he wishes to get liberation from such heavy pressure. As a result, playing video games becomes his solution.
According to the above topic, I have an interview with my high-school psychological teacher, Cathy. Cathy indicates that the phenomenon of addiction to the video games is really widespread. She also says that teenagers having bad self-assessment and school records are more likely to form network addiction. In China, the proportion of teenagers with network addiction in low-level development areas is higher than that in high-level development areas. Meanwhile, most of those internet-addicted teenagers belong to internet video game addiction, and others are cyber-relational addiction. That’s to say, nearly 47.9% of teenagers with internet addiction regard playing video games as the major objective of surfing the Internet, rather than study. Then certain disadvantages are brought. In order to play video games, many students are unwilling to go to school. And even if attending class, they are absent-minded and don’t have much motivation to study. Some even choose to sleep in the internet bars all night long. Then not only their school work would be backward, but also their physical health is tested. This is very disadvantageous for teenagers’ further growth. Lots of news has exposed that some teenagers die in Internet bars without coming home for many days. It’s very painful to hear those bad news. On the other hand, because they may need lots of money to pay expenses of playing video games and they can’t tell their parents the real intention of using money, the behaviors of cheat, borrow and steal etc. would occur. This may lead to serious social influence and hinder the promotion of the civil society. Every day, there are many similar events happening around us. The occurrence of such Internet boom is worth reflecting on and analyzing so that it can be efficiently solved .
In spite of all the above demonstration, some people still hold the opinion that video games would not cause children behavior problems because they think both of them don’t have direct connection. As for them, the reason why children have behavior problems when playing video games is that children themselves are lack of self-control ability and meanwhile their cognitive competence is limited (Caldwell, et al., 2013). Specifically, children are just in the period of strong curiosity so that they are very curious about all kinds of new things from the outside. Then under the urge of such strong curiosity and with weak self-control and self-discipline, it is very difficult for them to withstand the temptation of various video games. Besides, during the training process of cognitive ability, the deviation of children cognition in aspects of society, others and themselves would exist. Virtual network is full of abundant junk information. Then because of its openness and anonymity and weak-monitored environment, it would be very easy for children to click those information. Therefore, certain contingency questions including children behavior problems are led to.
On the other hand, those people even regard that video games would bring lots of advantages to children. Generally, because playing video games needs the cooperation of hands, brains and eyes, this would effectively improve children coordinate ability of hands, brains and eyes. This is beneficial for their enhancement of all aspects of body quality. In addition, to some degree, playing video games would relieve children study pressure and then relatively they may become more active towards study and life. Their thirst for knowledge would be fully motivated as well (Carina & Francisco, 2012). Concretely, firstly, video games would guide children to enter the fantastic computer world. Children nowadays are luckier, compared with ones in the past. This is because they can unconsciously and easily master knowledge through some interesting video games. This kind of teaching way would become the teaching mainstream in the future and also turn into the symbol of information era. Secondly, video games would make children have great interest in computers, which is the internal impetus of their studying computers. This can help to cultivate and develop their creative thoughts. For example, when children are playing video games, some computer problems such as system halted and insufficient memory would occur. Then this requires them to solve these problems by themselves. Thirdly, video games would stimulate children interest towards other subjects, let them think deeply and explore things with clear objectives. Finally, video games are closely connected with children future survival and employment. Those children playing video games can be more adaptive to the revolution of technology and the fierce competition of the society.
Even though the above opposite opinion is very persuasive, it doesn’t have powerful evidence to prove its accuracy and authenticity. Based on the interview content of Cathy, it again practically proves that video games indeed cause teenagers including children behavior problems such as skipping classes, stealing and cheating. In fact, there are many other behavior problems. Firstly, excessive video games could give rise to children’ serious violent behaviors (Brockmyer, 2015). Recently, some report shows that many children misconduct has close connection with violent video games (Gunuc, 2015). When underage children are allowed to play video games for over three hours, then the possibility of their participating in the fight would obviously increase and meanwhile their interest in school would begin to lose. Secondly, excessive video games could make children addicted to the video games become indifferent and their behaviors would be unconcerned and cruel (Matthews, 2015) . When in the low mood, they would not like to reveal his true feelings towards his parents or friends. On the contrary, they are more willing to reveal his sorrows to the strangers he gets to know in the video games. Sometimes even hearing that their loved relatives are sick, they may act without emotion and could still be peacefully and happily play the video games. As for the reasons of children addiction to the video games, they are involved with many aspects including family, school and the society. Although parents would be very sad when hearing their children are addicted to playing games, most of the time, it is parents who make their kids’ behaviors reach this situation (Brusso & Orvis, 2013). This is because they are always busy with their work and seldom communicate with their kids emotionally. Thus those children would feel spiritual emptiness and are lack of love. Then playing video games becomes their unique spiritual backbone. Children introverted and dis-social characters, highly developed information technology and the pressure of study work are also the important reasons. As for the relevant measures, there are mainly four points (Rogers, et al., 2015). Firstly, children should gradually form good online habits under the guide of their parents and teachers. For example, making plans before surfing the Internet is needed, which can get rid of immoderate playing video games. Secondly, children could develop other interests and hobbies in order to avoid relying on the virtual network world. For example, they can take part in sports, culture entertainment or communicative activities so as to enrich their amateur life. Thirdly, both parents and teachers must improve their acquaintance towards network. They should not blindly allow children to surf the internet to expand their horizon. And they also should not excessively control children to surf the internet. This link is very essential for predicting the internet addiction. Fourthly, parents should spare more time to listen to the heart-felt wishes of the children, carefully observe their change and then give timely guidance and education. The warmth of the family could make children not addicted to the internet world. Finally, the government should strengthen the management of the internet bars so as to provide a good social environment for teenagers.
All in all, nowadays the phenomenon of obsession to the video games has high occurrence rate among children especially for the ones in the middle and high grade of primary schools. The addiction to video games presents younger-age trend. Once children are addicted, it would be very hard to extricate themselves. This kind of addiction leads to certain behavior problems which seriously influences their physical and psychological health. It’s known that teenagers are the future of a nation and their good development plays an essential role in the development trend of the country. But now, the social problem of teenager internet addiction becomes more and more severe, which perplex teachers, parents and even the whole society. As a result, much attention must be paid to this topic and certain effective measures must be raised relevantly.
