In modern society, busyness has become a prominent problem to have resided in different corners of people’s life no matter one is in large city or not. The straightforward idea is that, the busier we are, the less time we can spare to deal with interpersonal relationship; the more time we devoted to work and study, the less we have to accompany our friends, family and lovers; the more we rely on machines and robots, the less we are potent and independent as before; and the capitalism, influenced by which we gradually lost our original aim and sense of happiness. Thereafter, today’s people become more and more isolated, muddle-headed and feint. “Efficiency” plays an interesting role in this process.

People gradually become busy for all types of reasons. Busyness comes from technology development, the influences of capitalism and also from changes of views of values. People tend to rely more on machines than on human beings. Life of New Yorkers are representative of residents in metropolis. “Busyness is our art form, our civic ritual, our way of being us.” (Gopnik 2002). They “bump into Mr. Ravioli” who were always very busy and it was virtual friend indeed (Gopnik 2002). In their life, they pay more attention to personal and group economic development, such as salary income, family expenses, medical payment, etc. This is not just for New Yorkers but for many residents in modern world who struggle against the pressures of life and follow the rules of modern society. When a child grow up in this type of environment, it will rely more on the materials rather than beautiful imaginations and dreams. With no time spent with true friends in life, they may encounter problems in developing their normal views of life and views of world. As mentioned, they might imagine a friend or a playmate whom they can turn to and play with, because they are very lonely inside. For an adult, with onerous tasks came from all aspects, their work, their study, their business, they spent more time with ice cold computers and electronic facility rather than our friends and family members. They find it too difficult to travel because time is “precious” and therefore they need to invest our time in more “valuable” stuffs. They would rather communicate with first-met strangers through the internet because it was fast and irresponsible. Time passes they begin to love the strangeness and dread familiarity. They fear interpersonal relationship not merely because they are busy and relative events or gatherings will occupy their time extensively, but also because they are no longer accustomed to deal with such relationships. Their capability in this category has degenerated, so much that when someday they wake up at late night and look into the ceiling, they think of nothing in mind but tiredness, with merely tears falling down from our empty eye sockets. Efficiency comes from the needs of capitalism, which we will discuss later, and cause people to concentrate as much on themselves as possible to ensure the high output. In the end, when they communicate they would probably produce “incomplete communication”, that fail to create or bring together the psychological effects communication should have. Although this is not true in all communities, obviously, for we can see in many desolated towns, small cities and rural areas people have enjoyed a more retired life with more leisure to hang out with relatives and friends, the globalization tendency has driven this type of life form into a common one, whose influence should not be looked down on.

To dig out the reasons for this type of busyness, we could not neglect the influences brought about by technology, and specifically, machines computers and robots. From the very beginning simple machines with single function such as the stream engine, to the more developed versatile function combined ones such as modern cell phones, cars and computers. Apart from extending people’s life by curing diseases, these technologies provide conveniences in solving a lot of difficult even impossible tasks in place of human beings. People tend to be idle with the help of these functions. More than this, “computers no longer wait for humans to project meaning into them.” (Tuckle 2). The installation of artificial intelligence into these machines makes them more potent, allowing more possibilities to resolve the versatile problems to meet human needs. Those machines became more and more intelligent, some could even communicate with human beings using some input human languages, some could memorize things by virtue of machine learning and data storage. As time passes, people would like to depend on these machines both physically and psychologically, not only treat them by inputting commands and letting them play certain functions, but also communicate with them, even treat them as intimate friends. On the other side, people who become lazier have little intention to hang out with friends and as a result reduce the contact and human relations. Another interesting influence brought about by technology is virtual reality and internet. People who live in the virtual world created online no matter it is in a game or in a chatting platform or a online forum have their new roles, new features and new virtual social positions there. This satisfies the needs of those who suffer a lot in life by providing them superior feelings they would never imagine. As a result, those persons become addicted to the internet or virtual world and have little time to stay with relatives or friends, creating the feeling of busyness and isolation. Technology is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides us convenience in dealing with onerous tasks, improve our life quality and help solve the once existing problems. On the other, it piques the formation of reliance in us, that propels us into a world full of virtual information but away from the once familiar and kind world of love and close interpersonal relationship. In the era of commutation, online platforms and software allow it to communicate easier for us in long distances, however, we could not entirely mimic the feelings face to face, i.e, we can not replace all the functions that having a dinner or hanging around with friends or relatives possess by connecting each other in the form of video, audio, or even just words. What’s worse, we find it easy to go forward, but extremely difficult to step back. Once we feel it we rely much on technology to improve our life and we are lazy and accustomed to the convenience it brings about to us. We find it extremely difficult to quit. In this aspect, it is a long-term burden rather than a relief of our psychological status to some extent.

On the social cultural influences to modern busyness, a phenomena we can not neglect or avoid talking about is capitalism. It is something might explain part and parcel of the causes of busyness. As we all know that, people who live in modern society driven by capitalism to work and earn money and as a result become busy would probably attach their busyness to creating “a happy family” (Hochschild). Once they do this they would take for granted their busyness and treat everything as a normal part of their life even label them with sacred tags. They follow the rules of capitalism but at the same they feel that they do all these for families and love. They are busy and in fact they spend little time with family but they believe that they do it for love. Even, according to some scholars, capitalism is a type of “religion” that “ is not part of communities but competes with communities” (Hochschild), something that a certain group of people who believes in it have to follow its doctrines and act it accordingly in life. For instance, as the society develops, the economic needs and business affairs from the companies drive the people away from their family gatherings and events. The effects brought about by capitalism, undoubtedly deepens the busyness of modern persons dominated by it and reduce their time to maintain interpersonal relationships.

Obviously, busy life is not a happy life we want. As far as I am concerned, a community is founded by families. A organized, healthy community exists only when members have privilege to communicate with each other frequently and meet each other daily so that they know each other well, confide to each other their stories pleasant or unpleasant and meet the original emotional demands of human beings, and on which basis the families within are all happy ones that have been allowed plentiful time to interact with each other and contribute to the community. The relationship between community and individual is like, an individual is an basic building block of the community mansion, but each individual is not dead or static. They have activities with each other have emotional feelings with each other which are like glues that connect tightly each other together. They need to back up each other to brace for the whole. On this basis, the community mansion can be robust and stable. Otherwise, if all individuals as blocks are isolated and self-oriented, the whole mansion would easily fall apart when storms come.
