It was launched on October 6, 2010 as a mobile photo-sharing app that was limited to IOS gadget owners. Similar to Twitter with followers, this social network provides real-time photo updates only instead of text updates. It took 8 weeks to build, 24 hours to have 200,000 users and less than 3 months to increase this number to 2 million. It was purchased by Facebook in 2012 with 1 billion dollars, which is the biggest purchase Facebook has ever attempted. As of Jan. 2017, Instagram “had reached 150 million daily active users, up from 100 million in October 2016” （The Statistics Portal, 2017）. The increasing popularity of Instagram has further expanded to Android users since the release of an Android version in the year of 2012, which means more users and more profiles. But why is it so popular in the background of social media era? How has it evolved from a simple app to worldwide known around the internet?

Instagram users are allowed to post images of random things, polish them with many filter alternatives, and comment and like them. They like the user-friendliness to get around, because it is easy to just snap a picture and post it to the app or other social networks in a moment. In this sense, Instagram is more of a tool of picture edition before sharing them on one’s preferred social networks. Another reason is that social media users are kind of more interactive and vociferous than traditional users, and Instagram satisfied their egos. Although there are some famous people using Instagram, such as Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian, most users are ordinary people, who feel like celebrities with followers or strangers liking their photos.

Also, Instagram is making attempts to release short videos. Therefore, instead of just pictures, users are able to add videos to their profiles. In the future, it may have videos as well as chat rooms in the app. It is possible that Instagram may become a tolling app, but I believe the popularity will not cut the profit. Think about it, “67% of Instagram’s users are under the age of 34; Of those who have a profile, 61% have used it in the past 24 hours, an adoption level only surpassed by Facebook (at 84%); and 48% of social media users declared they are using Instagram more often” (Social Habit Charts, 2012). The young and voracious users will continue to be bonded tightly with this mobile application, and the pool of users will further increase as the trend toward smartphones goes on.
