In 1938 when the appeasement policy peaked in the September, Britain and France attempt to sacrifice Czechoslovakia in Europe to achieve and seek peace. But it is not successful. Thus, in this article, it is to discuss whether the appeasement policies are wrong.
Appeasement policy is wrong as it just considers the interests of one country, but put others’ interests at risk even by violating the international convention and bonds. Appeasement policy is regarded by Lord Halifax as the way to make the Great Britain united and separated from the rest and the best way to save the Europe out of the suffering of war(Document E: Lord Halifax 1957). However, even if the supporters of appeasement policy realize the mistakes and harms of it, they were still supportive of it as they only cared about the interests of their own country. Henry Channon called the invasion of the Czechoslovakia in Europe as “a bolder departure from the written bonds”(Document D: Henry Channon 1939). There is anger and worry of the crime done by German fascists. Although Henry Channon has expressed his surprise and sadness for the failure of appeasement policy and the failure of results of Munich meeting, at the bottom of his heart, he still agreed with appeasement policy of then prime minister Chamberlain. He still comments on the deeds and appeasement policy of Chamberlain as right as it wins time for the British to arm up (Document D: Henry Channon, 1939). This selfish nature of appeasement policy is to only concern about the interests of the national interests, which makes it not only evil in moral aspect, but also makes it a violation of the international convention. But the prime minister Chamberlain and some British people dreamed to have peace of themselves by turning their backs on others.
The final results of appeasement policy carried out by prime minister Chamberlain also proved that it is a wrong policy as it gives rise to the power and morale of German fascists but decreases the strength of the righteous side. The discussion of avoiding the war is in a spirit of collaboration and good will (Document A (modified)). Thus, nothing happened with British and French watching the destruction of the provisions of the "Versailles Treaty". Thus, Hitler felt free to order the advance. In the Anglo-American indulgences, the fascists step by step, and gradually become evil and powerful, and ultimately become a source of suffering of the whole world, and all mankind. By contrast, just as Bartlett remarked, the British forces were unprepared when the war finally came and also lost their strong allies when the Czechoslovakia in Europe was already lost (Document C:Bartlett). This thought is also consistent with thoughts of Winston Churchill. To maintain the peace, it relies upon the increase of deterrents against the aggressors(Document B (excerpted)). Thus, the strength of German fascist expands much quicker because the British and other European power had no opposition. The appeasement policy can be called a shame in the humane history as they are supposed to fight together and defend the bonds when there was a common enemy. This brings cost to all nations in the end. The appeasement policy made the German fascists ecstatic, from which they were more free of fear, and speed up the pace of foreign aggression.
To sum up, after the German fascists came to power, they expanded very rapidly. One of the reason is the existence of appeasement policy which gives them a lot of unregulated space to expand, concerns about the interests of one country, and put others interests at risk.
