First of all, the abolishment of one-child policy could facilitate the development of Chinese economy. Human resources are one of the most important elements that guarantee a country’s production and basic operation. China is known as the “world factory” since the World War II, so the manufacturing industry has become the major part of Chinese economy. The cheap labor costs as well as the huge labor population have decisively contributed to the success of Chinese manufacturing industries. However, with the implementation of Chinese one-child policy, Chinese population is undergoing a dramatic decreasing. As a result, such leading edges in labor cost and population would not exist anymore. For example, in the late of 2014, Microsoft announced to close its two manufacturing factories in Beijing and Dongguan China aimed at reducing its labor cost by transferring its manufacturing centers to Southeast Asia countries. (“DoNews”) Some people may argue that such phenomenon would not influence Chinese economy, because it is the time for China to shift from manufacturing-based country to the technology-based country. However, this is not true because it is a long way for China to master the core technologies in manufacturing industries and replace the role in manufacturing. Therefore, labor resources and large population are still critical for Chinese economy development. Only by abolishing Chinese one-child policy could Chinas remain momentum in economic development and manufacturing capability improvement.
Secondly, the abolishment of one-child policy could deal with the problem of population aging. The one-child policy is the main reason that directly causes Chinese population aging. According to a research, “over 15% of the population is over the age of 60. Also, the number is expected to rise by 10 million every year.” (Xu 1) Population aging would result in a lot of social problems. On the one hand, it would increase burden of social medical care and welfare insurance. According to the “2015 National Social Insurance Fund Budget” released by the Chinese Ministry of Finance in the end of 2014, the deficit of pension insurance could reach the amount of 30 billion RMB in 2015, which indicates that it would be more and more difficult for government to afford such huge expenditure. On the other hand, it could impede a country’s innovation and creativity in kinds of aspects including culture, arts, technology and so on. Just imagine that one day, the majority of our people are too old to create new technologies, all the films and music are catering to the old people. How could China reveals its energy and activity in R&D innovation? How could new ideas emerge and how could the Chinese culture steps forward rather than stay traditional? Therefore, one-child policy should be abolished in order to prevent the deepening of population ageing. The developing countries need more new lives to keep moving.
Thirdly, the abolishment of one-child policy is the basic respect for the human rights. From the ancient times to the present, having children is the basic right for human beings. Moreover, the one-child family is an instable household structure in nature, which would result in negative effect both on the “one child” as well as the “two parents.” For children in the one-child family, their lives are naturally lack of the concepts of siblings. Their childhoods are full of loneliness because they lose the best friends, sisters and brothers, they originally could have. When they grow up, they are faced with much more burden of both providing for their old parents and fostering children. Today, the “4-2-1” family structures are very common in China, which means one grandchild, a couple of young husband and wife and four grandparents from parental side and maternal side. The young couple in the middle is under the greatest pressure and no other siblings could share the responsibilities. When they are getting old, they again suffer from the loneliness because of the few descendants they would have. As a Chinese student, I am the one-child in my family. When I was a little kid, my parents were very busy, so I was always locked in house with no one to talk and play with. At that time, best friend is my little doll and I named it “little sister”—how desired I could have a sister to change whisper to each other. When I grow up, I choose to study abroad. I miss my parents so much and I believe they miss me, too. I am the only child in my family. If I am not around them, how could they take care of themselves if they get sick? That’s the real situations of Chinese on-child families. Therefore, the abolishment of one-child policy would guarantee the basic human rights and contribute to the harmony of every family.
In a conclusion, it is necessary to abolish Chinese one-child policy at present. Only in this way could China achieve both economic development and social harmony.
