Artificial Intelligence became a hit topic recently, again. Developed by Google Deepmind, AlphaGo, a computer program designed to play Go, one of the most complicated board game, beat world champion Lee Sedol at 4:1 (Metz). The fact that artificial intelligence are becoming smarter and smarter raises abundant discussions about whether the artificial intelligence is able to benefit human beings and how can they contribute to the well-beings of human beings. This essay sets out to analyze the benefits of artificial intelligence, arguing that artificial intelligence increase human being’s welfare in family, workplace and even in the secret place of self.

Artificial intelligence is the intelligence made by human beings and embodied in software programs and machines. The ideas of artificial intelligence can date back to ancient Greek myths, such as the bronze robot of Hephaestus, and the monster in Mary Shelley’s 19-century novel Frankenstein (Hope). In the 20th century, with the efforts of Alan Turing and other scientists, artificial intelligence gradually came into reality (Hope). With the help of media and Hollywood movie, the power of AI is also known to the public. In the 1960s, there have been movies discussing the topics of artificial intelligence, such as Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey released in 1968. Nowadays, artificial intelligence is going into human being’s daily life. The commonest examples may be the artificial intelligence software such as Siri in iphone and Cortana in Windows 10. They can answer the user’s question, executed the user’s order and can even make jokes with the users. As technology develops quickly, artificial intelligence has become more and more advanced and popular. As artificial intelligence became more and more affordable and accessible, human beings will benefits greatly from it.

Freedom and Pleasure in Household

Artificial intelligence can liberate human beings at home. Firstly, artificial intelligence is able to replace human beings to finish many time-consuming chores, such as washing dishes, cleaning the floor, waxing the floor, painting the wall and reorganizing books in shelves. Although there have been some machines like dishes cleaning machines, they are not “smart” enough to finish the task as beautifully as human beings. For example, today the common home cleaning robots are not able to avoid the barriers in its way with the help of synthetic judgment of the environments and to change the route according to instant monitoring of the surroundings; it is also difficult for them to clean different places with different cleaning methods. However, with the help of artificial intelligence, route-planning and cleaning-method-planning of cleaning robots can be more effective and more quickly, and they can do the housework as smartly as human. In this way, people can leave these chores to the artificially intelligent robots without fear that dishes might be broken, carpet might be stained and the robots might be stuck in the corner. It’s reasonable when the technology become more mature, artificial intelligence can even take the jobs of looking after children and patients and cooking dinner according to the user’s favor. In this way, human beings are free from the time-exhausting business, and able to enjoy the happiness in family life.

Secondly, artificial intelligence is able to make the whole household wiser. The most famous wise house in the world may be Bill Gates’ mansion, where technology is embedded in every inch of the house (McGrath). Mark Zuckerberg, chairman of Facebook, also claimed that he was preparing for building a house with artificial intelligence, just as “Jarvis” in the movie Iron Man (Kastrenakes). However, the expense is so stunning that ordinary people is hard to afford. But with the popularization of artificial intelligence, ordinary people will be able to enjoy the convenience and comfort brought by technology in the future. Smart house with artificial intelligence is able to provide better surroundings surveillance for human beings. Just as the Bill Gates Mansion, artificial intelligence is able to identity the host and guest of the house (McGrath). In this way, the smart household is able to ensure the security of the house and change the environment according to personal preferences. After one-day work, the host of the house can enjoy the music he likes and the food he favors without even clicking the mobile phone. In the light of artificial intelligence, human beings are able to enjoy a smarter and warmer home.

Thirdly, artificial intelligence is also able to provide entertainment in the family. Artificial intelligence and interactive entertainment (AIIE) has become a popular field for academy and industry (AAAI). Artificial intelligence can provide more user-based entertainments for family, selecting the suitable programs for children, recording the favorite programs for the hosts, playing online games with the hosts through virtual reality devices. The way human beings entertain themselves will be drastically changed with the company of artificial intelligence.

In a word, artificial intelligence can benefit human beings in household by freeing human beings from chores, providing more “smart” environments and entertainment. People are thus able to enjoy more freedom and pleasure in the family.

Revolution at workplace

Artificial Intelligence is also able to benefit human beings at workplace. In human history, every time new technologies were born, there would be great transformation in industry and business. During the two industrial revolutions, great innovations were created, including steam engine, textile machine, steel and iron, railways, revolutionizing the productivity of human beings, transforming human’s relationship with the nature, and bring sea-change to human’s life at workplace (“Industrial Revolution”). As experts claim, artificial intelligence, the flagship of the forthcoming industrial revolution, may bring great transformation to human beings at workplace (Woollaston).

Firstly, artificial intelligence is able to liberate human beings from repeated or dangerous works. Just as the way artificial intelligence frees people from chores, it can help human beings deal with those trivial jobs, such as filing documents, recording meetings, making schedules and producing goods in assemble line; it can also help human beings finish dangerous jobs, such as mining, conducting experiments and trial flight. It’s reported in a Chinese factory, 90% workers in assemble lines have been replaced by artificial intelligence robots (Forrest). This trend may go on in the future. In this way, people are free from those meaningless but time-costing jobs as well as those dangerous jobs, being left more time for creative jobs, such as designing, painting and writing. Technology optimist Kevin Kelly even published an article in Wired claiming that in the future more and more jobs will and should be replaced by artificial intelligent robots, which can finish the jobs accurately, and in the end the only job for human beings may be designing works for robots. His opinion may sound too radical, but the picture that robots take over more and more jobs and leave more freedom to human beings may be true.

Artificial intelligence also helps make accurate decision. In the modern business and industrial world, human beings may be confused by the complicated environments, elusive causal relationship of events and unintended consequences of decision makings. Unlike machines, it’s hard for human beings to collect every kind of information and imagine the real world according to this information. However, artificial intelligence can overcome these difficulties, grasping comprehensive information in a second and simulate the actual world to predict what would happen. As scholar Gloria Phillips-Wren and Lakhmi Jain points out, artificial intelligence of this kind can serve as decision making tool by “coordinating data delivery, analyzing data trends, providing forecasts, developing data consistency, quantifying uncertainty, anticipating the user’s data needs, providing information to the user in the most appropriate forms, and suggesting courses of action” (1). Artificial intelligence can effectively help human beings make decision at workplace and reduce mistakes and risks.

Many people are afraid that artificial intelligence may take over their jobs in the future. However, artificial intelligence benefits human beings at workplace in a longer terms. Artificial Intelligence is able to replace human beings to finish repeated and dangerous jobs and help human beings make better decision. Human beings can thus benefits greatly from artificial intelligence.

A Better Self

Artificial intelligence can be a good company in our family life and work, and when we are alone, we can also benefit from it. Artificial intelligence can provide company for everyone to improve themselves and have fun when being alone.

Artificial intelligence can help human beings improve themselves reflexively. Today with the help of wearable devices and smart phone, human beings are able to surveil their own life, recording the calorie they consume, the quality of sleep, the data of body health, which is named “the culture of self-reflexivity” (Lupton). In the future, artificial intelligence may penetrate more parts of human’s daily life, helping human beings master the information of their own lives, such as the new knowledge they have gained, the people they are keeping close connection and the efficiency of working, enabling human beings to lead a more self-reflexive life. Artificial intelligence can also help monitor the health of human beings, and become a doctor and health consultant in the future, enabling human beings to lead healthier lives and build up better selves. There are even some predictions that claim artificial intelligence can tell doctors how to treat a patient (Hernandez). With the reflexive monitoring of artificial intelligence, people are able to construct a better self.

Artificial intelligence is also able to help human beings overcome loneliness. In modern world, human beings tend to feel lonely in many situations without friends to talk to and drink with. With the company of artificial intelligence, human beings can handle these moments more easily. Artificial intelligence can detect the personal information of users, and “talk” and “sing” and even “dance” to the user, placating the loneliness of human beings and providing pleasure to human beings. Artificial intelligence can be just like a good friend of human beings to provide understandings and comforts (Moynihan).

Although there may be doubt about whether the relationship between artificial intelligence and human beings violates ethical principles (Palmer), the development of artificial intelligence would never cease. The better solution of related ethical issues is to adopt a more practical attitude and become adaptable to the newly emerging social context of artificial intelligence, so as not to neglect the benefits of artificial intelligence, such as recording our lives and reducing our loneliness.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence can effectively benefit human beings. It can make human beings freer and more pleasant at home, more effective and accurate at workplace, and more self-reflexive and happier when being alone. To some extent, artificial intelligence can become human being’s good friend.
