As you all know, 2013 has been a very tough year for everyone at HTC. We are working hard to live up to the title as Taiwan’s largest smartphone maker in the global context of post-economic downturn. And we try our utmost to preserve our organizational culture and value.
Today, we announced our net income in the afternoon. The fourth-quarter earnings was NT$310 million ($10 million), with revenue for the quarter falling 29 percent to NT$42.9 billion. Our shares fell 3.6 percent to NT$133.50 as of the close of trade in Taipei, the lowest since Oct. 21. Apparently, the release of our flagship model One Max phone and the signing with Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. failed to halt a nine-quarter slide in sales, according to the sluggish demand of our One Max and the mid-range Desire-series models. What’s worse, the possible offsetting between the benefit from our corporation with China Mobile, mainland China’s biggest telecommunication company, and the increasingly fiercer competition from leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs) and other mainland China brands, such as Lenovo and Huawei, forces us to view 2014 as a worse year for HTC.
Founded in 1997, HTC is dedicated to provide global users with innovative and friendly mobile phone experience. Also, we try to set up the image of a responsible and grateful citizen, willing to pay back and contribute to the society through supporting a range of programs in our communities that include academics and education, environmental protection, culture and arts and volunteer services. These are our valuable inherited culture and tradition, which will be upheld in spite of whatever predicaments.
All of these have forced us to progressively restructure our enterprise organization, to reduce the cost and invest the exiguous profit into consistent research and technology development and a number of scholarships for students from low-income households in Taiwan and Mainland China's remote villages.
As a result, we are forced to make difficult decisions that will impact some of our employers’ lives. According to the lackluster sales performance presented in the report we have received, approximately 500 non-flagship stores or underperforming flagship stores will be permanently shutdown. Managers and employees of these stores in both Taiwan and Mainland China, as well as workers in our Shanghai and Wuhan factories, will be affected. Again, I apologize for this decision’s unpalatable potential of affecting our employers’ lives and families. I would like to express my sincere thanks to their precious dedication to HTC.
I believe that with your understanding of the decision we made and strong support for us, the future of HTC will be healthier and brighter. And I can promise you that I and the leadership team will do all that we can to totally get rid of the negative influence of economic recession and stick to the company’s culture and value that we are all proud of.
