Through two weeks’ study and readings of the modules, I have obtained knowledge and realization of issues about race, gender and sexuality. This week’s modules are about reality TV (RTV), which talks about the race and gender from a special perspective of TV representations. As is known to us, reality TV is an increasingly popular genre of television programming in recent years. More scholars have begun to do research on this television program. They mainly study the problems of the influence of RTV on race and gender, such as, what is the role of agency or self-representation in reality television? How can we understand representations of race on reality compared with previous representations? With the continual increase of RTV’s popularity, studies on the reality TV have been diversified, such as DR. Rachel Dubrofsky and Dr. Robin Boylorn, who make classic contributions to the relevant study.
This week’s study makes me understand better issues about race, class and gender. Dr. Rachel Bubrofsky wrote an essay on The Bachelor and Flavor of Lover with her coauthor, and Dr. Boylorn wrote an essay on the similar issue based on her experiences as an African American female media critic from a different methodological perspective of autoethnography. Both essays have deep and classical explanations on the RTV, and make us understand how to contextualize representations of race, class and gender with RTV compared with the previous staged representations, as well as provides a new perspective of research method for the study of race and popular culture. Also, through the study of representation of Arab, Arab Americans and the politics of “Brown Face”, I understand better how to represent Arab and Arab Americans in popular culture and the heated arguments between histories of black face and new critiques of brown face.
However, after thinking over the issue, I ask myself, is it reasonable that the appearance of reality TV means a new and good development of racial, class and gender movement? My answer is yes， that is, the appearance of reality TV, such as the Flavor of Lover, indicates a better development of race, class and gender, although there is still some discrimination of race, class and gender in the RTV. The topic of this week reminds me that a similar TV show named You Are My Only in China has invited black women in the TV representations. In this show, the black women are all relaxed and have no restrictions. Importantly, they are popular among the audience. However, Chinese cannot see any black people in Chinese TV shows several years ago. Thus, no matter whether there is any discrimination in the TV representations, the TV shows like the Flavor of Lover suggest a new development of race, class and gender issue, and I believe it will go better and better.
As for such the TV shows, a good indication of race development, I think the workers of the TV programming play a significant role in the TV representations. Especially, the hosts may be the most important in the TV shows, as they have to deal with the emergence on the occasions when doing the shows, such as to guide well the audience, not to meet embarrassed questions. There should be a reasonable system of surveillance as well to better develop such shows.
In summary, through these weeks’ study, I deeply understand heavy inequality of race, class and gender still exists here and there. Many critics on this issue have never stopped diversifying, for example, the studies on the recent increasing popular TV shows. Nonetheless, I believe the future of such the issue will go towards a bright door.
