Two opinions on the issue of gun control

America is the country with the most civil firearms in the world. According to the estimation of FBI, at present, about 250 million guns are in private hands. Besides, 5 million new guns are purchased by private persons every year. Those private persons own a large number of guns, which following brings a series of social problems. Some statistics show that, among 2 million violent crimes and 24000 murders occurring in America every year, 70% of them are connected with guns (Bangalore and Messerli). Thus since the 1960s, gun control movement throughout the United States has begun to spring up on a large scale (Guha 1-10). Just like Democratic Party and Republican Party which have clear boundaries, there are two camps giving tit for tat on the issue of gun control. One is to support gun control; the other is against gun control. Over the years, there are lots of debates among those two camps which respectively have success or failure.

As for the camp supporting gun control, the most important reason it holds is that gun control can greatly reduce the crime rate of guns and then make sure the social security. This is because through the ages, there are so many gun-related crimes which lead to serious impact on the whole society. Those crimes are involved with the death of some famous people such as four American presidents and Martin Luther King. Meanwhile they are also related to many school shooting incidents etc. The school shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary School is such an example. In recent years, shooting accidents become even more violent, and this brings a greater panic and hinder to people’s life and the social development (Correa 253-262). Then the petition of gun control is raised again and again. The camp supporting gun control thinks that America doesn’t have a very rigorous administration on guns all the time. This makes certain people easily buy guns and then conduct crimes. Based on this condition, effective gun control can guarantee that criminals would not have chance to get guns. Then the security in many places such as in the campus and in public places would be immensely reinforced. As result, it raises that gun control should be seriously put into practice instead of acting as an empty slogan. Specifically, American government must tightly control guns used to kill people and doesn’t allow people to obtain deadly weapons. In addition, related education to the public is also needed.

However, as for the camp against gun control, its power is strong all the same. The main reasons it holds lie in three aspects. At first, it believes that people are born to own guns. This opinion can trace back to American history and national conditions. By the use of guns, people can timely protect their family and themselves and then avoid something bad occurring. Secondly, it considers that gun control doesn’t have direct relationship with the warranty of social security. In other words, more shooting accidents would not be aroused by more people with guns. Thus there is no need to conduct gun control. Finally, it points out that Americans have the right to own and use guns, which has been written into the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Thus owning guns is civil rights in America. National Rifle Association is the most essential organization in favor of people freely owning guns (Andrés and Hempstead). After faced with so many shooting accidents, this organization still insists that everyone has the right to port arms because it can make for people’s safety. What it often propagandizes is that in order to prevent bad people from committing crimes, the only way is that good people having guns in their hands. On the other hand, some specialists put forward that the law completely prohibiting individual guns could only restrain those people who abide by the law. When similar incidents like the massacre at Virginia Tech University happen, the righteous can only fold their hands and wait for death (Guha 1-10).

In conclusion, up to this day, gun control has already become an extremely controversial issue within American political life. And to some degree, its importance has even surpassed the issue of the induced abortion. There are few discussions on public policies which would be as fierce as the issue of gun control. Generally, there is a huge divergence between the camp supporting gun control and the one against gun control. This issue deeply touches people’s inner emotions. Then step by step, these two camps carry out intense competition in levels of the federal, state and local.
