The Wonderful Reference Books Which examines miniature and sublime

Introduction

This collection of essays examines miniature and sublime through a combination of the author’s personal experiences and logical reasoning with materials drawn from wonderful reference books, like Stein’s The World in Miniature: Container Gardens and Dwellings in Far Eastern Religious Thought and Borges’ The Aleph. Three essays included appreciate the beauty of the miniature from perspectives of being an epitome of the world, sublime in non-literary objects and experiences and geometric figures in sequence.

This collection centers on the program of the miniature as the first essay discusses the appreciation of microcosm and the third explores how to describe the miniature. The essays mentioned provide two possible approaches in furthering studies on the miniature. One is to apply the concept of miniature to the real world to understand human behaviors. The other is to make internal explore in describing miniature by forming finite and bounded geometric figures either by using images or by building it with the development of the plots. Spontaneous comparison between personal experiences and abstract concept of the miniature plays a vital role in these essays, leading people towards more profound thinking about different aspects of life and becoming a supporting pillar of our own systematic theories as well. At the same time, textual analysis is an approach not to be overlooked as it serves as a research device to examine the details of miniature and literary works of this theme.

In addition to the insights of these essays mentioned above, this collection also reflects some of my weaknesses in my scholarship. From the perspective of language, ideas involved could have been organized in a more logical way with more natural and necessary transitions and supported with enough evidences in a coherent order. From a researcher’s angle, some of the essays focus too much on my own experiences, which makes reasoning less convincing. I might have been overlooked the importance of field research, by which I mean that interviewing other people’s ideas towards miniature via questionnaires and short interviews could better support this sort of works.

If anyone wants to make a response and expand on these essays, I suggest that a close reading of works cited could help to form a comprehensive understanding of the topic and gather more detailed evidences to widen the existing ideas. Besides, interviewing other people’s opinions towards the miniature could also work as an applicable way to stimulate new innovative thoughts and provide original evidences to support our own studies. More academic books and articles are also recommended to be included in furthering studies on the miniature.
