Let the world filled with love

The hen who dreamed she could fly, which was written by Sun-Mi Hwang, tells a very touching story about the entire life of a special hen. The story is painful and striking. The heroine, sprout, went through a lot of difficulties during her short but splendid life. No matter what cruel treat or despise she received, she still holds a positive attitude towards life, accepted the bad side of the world, thanked good side of the world and show kindness to everyone she met. Life is hard but if anyone has the conscience to fill the world with love, the world will be better. 

The story describes the extraordinary life of a hen, whose name is sprout, who dreamed of laying an egg by herself, even though she was in a coop where her egg will be taken away as soon as sprout had one. This thought arose the leaving of sprout and subsequent stories. Finally, sprout had laid an egg and brought him up. Though she still be caught by a weasel and lost her life in the end, she experienced a lot of things that other hens could not imagine.

Although the story is not very long, it reflects various relationships between people, especially the cold side, like an epitome of a whole society. The relationship between the host of the chicken farm and sprout, which represents a kind of interest relationship. As soon as sprout cannot provide profits to the host, they abandoned it at once. Sympathy emotion that straggler has on sprout. He saved her when she was stuck in the same trouble that he encountered once. The insensibility that other animals in the barn showed when they knew the situation of sprout, though they more or less suffered the same difficulties. The family love between sprout and straggle when they together incubated the greentop. The great love that sprout shows to greentop and weasel. When greentop grew up, he wanted to pursuit for his own life, although sprout felt very lonely and need his company, she did not stop him and gave him freedom. That is the love of a mom. Though weasel killed her, but she did not blame him at all but felt content that she can help the weasel to bring up his children. In this story, sprout is a very brave and philanthropic. She has her own dream and insist on it and tried to realize it as long as she got the chance. Besides, she can let greentop to go for his ideal life and forgive weasel at the end of her life. No matter what unfair treatment she met before, she still chose to be kind to the world. 

Some relationships described in the story are very impressive and I would like to pick some of them to discuss further.

Some people go for their own profits at sacrificing the interest of others, which is as the host treating sprout. This reminds me of the story, the ones who walk away from Omelas. Everyone has a very pleasant and satisfied life there, as described in the story, like a city in a fairy tale. (Ursula Le Guin, 2) but all this fabulous stuff that they enjoy depend on the misery of an innocent child. When they are having a big summer festival, the pity child is starving and stuck in a dirty and shady room. All adults know the existence of the child but no one dare bring it into the sunlight because as soon as they do, their happiness will be gone for good. Though they know it cruel, many people still ignore it and live in Omelas with guilt. It is not an uncommon phenomenon that nowadays a number of people obtain their interests at the expense of others. Some developed countries is for maintain their power to interrupt other poorer countries’ policy to get “privilege”, regardless of lives there; some merchants produce low-quality products selling as good ones to customers, regardless of the harm to them; some people just want themselves to have a better life, they abandon their parents, regardless of the condition of their old body. Tendency to happiness and blessing is the nature of human beings, but at cost of other’s satisfaction is inhuman. It is too ruthless to enjoy the happiness which is obtained by others’ pain. What if you were the baby who is enduring the hopeless life in the dark room? Why should it had this suffering? Everyone is fair and no one has a right to deprive other’s way of living to get what they want. 

Some people insensitive to what others go through, just like the other animal to sprout. And they just cannot be friendly to others, even though others have done nothing wrong. Like the description in the hen who dreamed she could fly, the hen in the barn push sprout away unfriendly because she is laying an egg, other animals think that sprout is a burn but actually there are enough room for sprout to stay without taking up any one’s place. (the hen who dreamed she could fly,19-22) Just like the story talked by Kamaal Majeed, the boy from Waltham, Massachusetts. He is treated unfairly since middle school, and there are always some people asking “why don’t you ‘act black’”, because he does not dress fat clothes and likes rock music. (Kamaal Majeed, 1-2). The discrimination between racism still exists. Some people always believe that they are superior to others. They despise other races with words and attitude. They ask some unkind questions which they will never ask their companion. This kind of isolation is a kind of cold violence, which makes people with colors feel isolated and the insensibility of the society. Like the rooster in the story, its indifference is unsuited its look. Maybe it has a pretty appearance, but it will never have a beautiful heart like sprout does. In addition, everyone will more or less encounter difficulties during their whole lifetime. If you just show insensibility when others are in trouble, is mostly likely that when you have the similar situation, no one will come to help you. This is very common in daily life. People who are indifferent to others always are always abandoned by the majority. People who are unwilling to help others are always hard to find helpers when in difficulties. What comes around comes around. So be kind to the world, the world will give you a smile in return. Giving a hand to others will do nothing bad to you. Instead, you can get lots of help when you need it. Why not? 

Indeed, we cannot deny the truth that many people are utilitarian and insensible, but we should still believe that there are still sprouts and stragglers in the world. The natural disaster happened recently, Nepal earthquake, took almost 4000 lives away in few days. Only on April 29, India, the adjacent country of Nepal, has delivered 187 tons of supplies to help Nepal to go through the catastrophe (Ravi Agrawal). Besides, the countries all over the world are trying to give a hand to Nepal by sending rescuers or donating money. Austria donated 3.9 million dollars to Nepal and Israel dispatched 260 people to help them find survivors and provide medical aid. (Ravi Agrawal) All countries help Nepal for free, just because we are all human beings and we believe that no matter which country meet this disaster, other countries will give their hand. As a Chinese, I will always be grateful what people from different countries, different races, help us china to rebuild our home in Wenchuan earthquake. These kindness relief our pain and give us more courage to back up. Life is unpredictable. It has laughs and tears. With love between people, it makes laugh happier and tear smaller. 

Being kind to those who are strangers is much easier that to those who have ever hurt us, but sprout does. She sacrificed her life to weasel selflessly. Maybe there are some voices that it is nonsense to do this satisfaction. However, from the perspective of sprout, she got peace at the end of her life. She did the kindness follows her heart. If she cursed and hated weasel when she died, she would not be peaceful when she went to the heaven. Sometimes, put down the anger, and be kind to your enemy is not a stupid thing. It does good to you. It does good to the world since it may let the enemy become your friend. There is a famous allusion in china explain this theory. The story took place in the Warring States period between Lin Xiangru, a senior official of Zhao, and Lian Po, the commander-in chief of the zhao army. Po disrespected Lin because he thought he got the position by words. In contrast, Lin did not blame him and show respect to him in return. Finally, Po realize his impolite behavior and apologized to Lin in person. If Lin was also contempted Po, their relationship will never be improved and probably had a bad influence on the union of Zhao.

Actually the hen who dreamed she could fly is a sad story, but it also makes readers have a feeling of coziness conveying a positive attitude toward life. Sprout though lost her life at the end, but with the help of straggler, her experience laying an egg by herself and brings him up, which she can never make it if she spent her whole life in the coop. Life is difficult and we may encounter unfriendly even evil people, but we still have to maintain optimistic and love the people and the world. We should believe that there are more kind people in the world and good-heartedness often meet with recompense. It is we that can make the world better. Fill the world with love, not the anger or insensibility. It is everyone’s duty and we can make it.
