本文讲述了我对音乐的喜爱。“与一些表达对生活的不满的粗俗的歌曲相比，我仍然喜欢一些舒缓的歌曲，如21枪。这是我最喜欢的歌，由绿色天乐队创建。实际上，这是一首为抗议战争而创作的歌。然而我更愿意把它作为我们逝去的青春的墓志铭。随着舒缓而强烈的音律，我似乎被带入了这样一个状态，在那里回顾我的青春时光，放下武器，放弃战斗......”

Green Day’s Puck Rock

I felt very curious when I first knew Green Day Band at the age for junior high school. The first song I listened to was their masterpiece Wake Me up When September Ends, which impressed me a lot for its slow but heavy rhythm. In view of that I tried to look for other songs created by them but the result was not so optimistic, for most of their songs belonged to what I later recognized as Puck Rock.

You can imagine how difficult for a child under 12 to accept Punk Rock music. Because of that, I locked their albums away until the day I entered my puberty. Related to the adolescent rebellion and palpitation, I gradually realized the power of the mass destruction of Green Day Band and its Punk Music via the function of turning my heart’s rumble of youth into passionate music.

I try to figure out their purpose of creation and why the music is able to have a resonance for me. I strongly believe without the similar life experience Green Day Band cannot strike my heart so resonantly. Born in 1970’s, members of Green Day Band were all stigmatized the symbols of that era of the US-hippies, desire for freedom, fight against confession, curiosity about sex and drugs. Similarly, all members of Green Day discontinued their studying when they were under 18. Based on this, they were what we call “bad students” nowadays. I’d like to take the lead singer-Billie Joe Armstrong for example. According to his personal experience, at the age of 18, he quit high school when he only accomplished halfway. He took advantage of all his available time for his new-built band Sweet Children, which was the predecessor of Green Day Band. He thought he had already known what he wanted to do and should do. Certainly, music. Due to the thinking, he regarded school as a kind of obstacle so he quit. Now we can realize the aim of establishment of Green Day Band, which is unremitting pursuit of dreams. And that is the reason why Green Day’s music can easily deeply affect our minds. 

Compared to some of songs with vulgar words to express dissatisfaction towards life, I still prefer some soothing songs such as 21 Guns. It is my favorite song created by Green Day Band. Actually, it was a song created for protesting the war. However I prefer to regard it as an epitaph for our passing youth. With soothing but strong music I seem to be led into such a condition, where I am asked to review my youth time after passion, to lay down your arms, give up the fight. After crazy years we have eventually been realistic. We innocently insisted that I was the one to change the shape of the world, which had been proved of course impossible. But the memory for this special period will never fade away. Citing the words given by Billie Joe himself, we know 21 guns in the one hand, is to vent fury towards wars and appeal to maintain peace; in another hand, to express unfaith to the George Bush’s government. Of course, it’s acceptable if we have our individual understanding on the song.

However, in view of the content and emotion Green Day’s songs express, some people criticize that they are all too passive to sing out. Some even satire that their songs are much worse than the noise made by a tank’s engine. There was another event related to Green Day happening in Iheart Radio scene. The sponsor squeezed Green Days’ time for performance into 1 minute. During this 1 minute, Billie Joe angrily cursed the sponsor with lots of F words rather than sang a song as soon as possible. He even crushed a guitar into pieces to let off this extreme anger before he left the stage. This event arouse a heat argument among the public. Some said that was real punk while others commented it was offensive more or less. Whatever, Like it or lump it can never be the motto of punk and we can never judge without truth.
