All Quiet on the Western Front

During the period of World War II, the Kaiser William II’s armies were at war with Russia, France and British in the two front lines of east and west, where the warfare was extremely intense and furious. The Germany government was appealing to the young and fervent student volunteers to devote into battlefield. In a small town at German’s backside, a group of youth students were enlisted to join the army in the instigation of chauvinism by the older teacher Kantlayke. Driven by his minds of becoming a hero, nineteen-years-old Paul then volunteered to enroll under the so-called governmental slogan of “fighting bravely” and “defending the motherland”. His friends Cam Leigh, Muller and so on also joined the army. One of them called Bemba who’s suffering hysteria was assigned to the same unit. In this way, these blindfolded youths finally turned into soldiers and had themselves parted from their parents and hometown for giving their lives for militarism.
From start of enrollment, Paul and other comrades were thrown into intensified military training, where from dawn to dusk they were drilled with shuttle run in the loose, wet and dark fields. After several times of harsh training, they were completely exhausted. However, drillmaster Storrs still tried to train them to be obedient and genuine Germany soldiers. These youths would have idealized their lives and the war. But for now their naïve dreams were shattered. Shortly after training, Paul and other comrades were immediately sent to the western front for battle. What warfare had to be was never known for these youths, who encountered heavy bombardment once they were on the battlefield. In the rumbling of the guns, they were so frightened to death either weeping or wetting pants. Fortunately they met a nice mentor, an old soldier, who took good care of these unsophisticated baby-soldiers. He would initiatively console them and taught them of survival skills in the battlefield. Then Paul and his comrades started forward on the battle to kill others’ beloveds and take away others’ lives. Running through a hail of bullets with faiths of “I would be killed if I did not kill enemy”, they shouted “forwarding” and “Slaughtering”. If defeated, they retreated back and then continued with counterattack. In the high level of tension and fear, Bemba was really running mad. In a battle, Cam Leigh had his legs ripped off and lost his young life. Muller was poisoned to death by chemical toxicity. In addition, soldiers also had to endure hunger, humidity, disease and bad weather on the front. Sadly, Paul grieved, ‘why there is a war?’
Paul was also wounded in a battle and hospitalized to field hospital for treatment. After recovery, he was approved with a leave to visit his mother at home. His seriously-ill mother was feeling extremely happy for his son’s safe return. However, a touch of sadness was again rising up in her mind that did not know whether his son could return back next time. Also Paul was concerned if he could see his mom afterwards. When his returning-back-unit date was drawing close, one day Paul just passed by his former old school, seeing the teachers as before advocating the warfare and mobilizing students to join the army. Paul was really fed up with wars and feeling so resentful for each of their motions. But those students still took it for funs.
When Paul returned back to the front, in the company he found another batch of baby soldiers who were as much naïve and childish as they were, but remained much less old army comrades. During his leave, almost all old army comrades in the company died actually. But only the old mentor Katczinsky was still alive. However, Katczinsky’s troop units were having supplying problems at this time, and the old mentor went out to search foods for the baby soldiers. Then Paul ran out of the company and worked his way to find the old mentor. They were extremely happy after being apart for a long time. It was at this moment that a bomb plane dropped the bomb that the old mentor got wounded by the flying shrapnel. Then Paul spared no efforts to take Katczinsky on his back and sent him to the medical station. However he died already then.
One day both parties ceased fire that on the western front it was unusually quiet. Paul discovered a beautiful butterfly while stationing in the trench. But when he was crawling out of trench to catch the butterfly, there was suddenly a gunshot and Paul fell down by hit of a stray bullet. However on this day, the war communiqué of Germany front lines command clearly wrote, “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
