Analysis of Missing Women in Vancouver

The book Missing Women, Missing News written by David Hugill received a large reflection and many critiques since its publication. Based on a narrative of sixty killed women, a psychotic serial killer and bad policing in Vancour Downtown Eastside, the book is very wonderful and insightful, as it discusses and explores deeply the reasons to the negligence of those killed women and other relevant aspects. Also, the book has a clear structure of writing thought, which makes readers better understand the book.
With four chapters, the book deeply analyzes and explores this crime case system and its relevant study. In Chapter One, the book first explains the initial limitations of media coverage and the crisis of such the case, as well as the lasting effects. As for the second chapter, the author tries to analyze the role of the state in fostering the conditions that produced and imperiled marginalized women in British Columbia. Then in Chapter Three, the book illustrates the case with specific images of the missing women and sex worker from the Downtown Eastside. Through the convincing explorations in the last three chapters, the author tries to detail the ways in which coverage mapped the Downtown Eastside, using a multitude of images on street-level chaos that set the neighborhood as symbolically distinct and disconnected from the rest of the city from the perspective of human geography.
The author argues the disappearance of women in Downtown Eastside deeply and convincingly, which has been neglected for a long time, and thus gave rise to a great reflection since its publication. However, the critiques on the disappearance of women have never stopped being diversified, and the phenomena of missing women seem to continue to appear, though the problem has come into people's eyes. Therefore, to interpret this book more deeply, I will utilize four articles from The Vancouver Sun to discuss the topic.
The first article named National Inquiry On Missing, Murdered Women Not Best Answer is written by Robyn Bourgeois in December 2012. This article mainly talks about the appeal to the national inquiry into the phenomenon of missing and murdered women and calls for the role of government to protect women after watching Monday's release of the final report of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, as well as tells that the phenomenon of missing and murdered women is still a very heavy and heartbreaking problem. Also, the author discusses and analyzes why the state should take an inquiry into the phenomenon as soon as possible, and advocates that it is urgent for governments to take measures to protect women from being hurt.
Besides, James Keller wrote an article about the topic of missing women on The Vancouver Sun named Missing Women Inquiry Recommends Metro Vancouver Regional Police. This article mainly argues that the phenomenon of missing women gives rise to a heated debate about whether there should be a regional police department in the Vancouver area, one of the only major cities in Canada not protected by a single, unified force. By explaining the reasons of the failure of stopping the phenomenon of missing and murdered women, the author analyzes the importance of the role government to protect women and puts forward some suggestions to establish a regional police regardless of other opposite sounds.
The article Is Anyone Listening To The 'Forsaken,' Marginalized Women Of Vancouver? gives readers deep sympathy on the missing and marginalized women in Vancouver. It mainly tells us that the marginalized and abandoned even missing women have no one heard for a long time, and appeals to people to take more heed of these people. Meanwhile, the author argues that for a long time the marginalized women, abandoned women, or even women fail to get more attention from other people in Vancouver, though those words are familiar or even always repeated to them. Meanwhile, the author tries to analyze why people should pay more attention to those women, and stresses the importance of media to those women.
Since the publication of David's book Missing Women, Missing News, the phenomenon of missing women gives rise to many critiques. The article Pickton Inquiry: Leadership Failures Stalled Probe Of Missing Sex Workers, for example, talks about the phenomenon of missing women from an inquiry, and explores the investigation of the phenomenon of missing women could not be carried out continually because of the failure of massive leadership of governments and media. With no support from the government plus the help of media, it was very hard to do the investigation of this phenomenon, which is illustrated with three reasons. At the end of the article, the author calls on the people's large attention to the phenomenon and the support of government and media in order to reduce or even eliminate this phenomenon of missing women.
After summarizing and analyzing the four articles from The Vancouver Sun and the book by David Hugill, I find that all have discussed and explored the phenomenon of missing women, which is a heated and heavy issue in Vancouver. Also, all have suggested the important role of government to solve the problem and thus protect women in Vancouver. However, they have some differences as well. Some just focus on the role of government and ignore the media's, while some indicate both. Also, they have their own structure of writing thought and perspectives of writing respectively and separately. Nonetheless, whether they different or not, they all explore the heavy phenomenon of missing women in Vancouver for people, and thus give rise to people's attention to such the phenomenon.
