Industrialization was mainly a benefit to all citizens. The Industrial Revolution changed citizens' lives and improved the quality of life. Industrialization is a good thing if properly balanced. For example, there will be quality utensils in any kitchen in America; clothes, shoes, and other necessities will be mass produced and available at reasonable costs (Johnson, 18-4). There are many that benefited from the Industrial Revolution, but among them, the labor workers benefited most, while handcrafters suffered.

The handcrafting businesses at home or small shops indeed suffered from industrialization. Andrew Carnegie, an industrialist that later became the monopoly in America’s steel industry was correct in his analysis of the core benefit of industrialization (Class, 9/22/16). The previous system of artisans who served apprenticeships and then became journeymen and ultimately masters served a small un-urbanized population well. Most products were, as he points out, homemade at the family hearth or in small shops. Masters and apprentices lived approximately the same lives in almost the same conditions (Johnson, 18-4). Unfortunately, these conditions were universally coarse. With industrialization, this entire system becomes obsolete, although the next rise of unions emulated it in many ways.

With industrialization came mass production and vastly improved products. (Some citizens gave the world the cotton gin, but more importantly, they gave the world inspiration about advanced technology and that launched the industrial revolution. With interchangeable parts, products could be produced in dramatically greater quantities and of improved quality. Items previously only reserved for the very wealthy are now available to all citizens, including labor workers.

There were problems associated with this, especially poverty. Thomas O’Donnell’s testimony before the U.S. Senate in 1883 describes what we today would call “grinding poverty.” His children were relegated to mismatched hand-me-down shoes and no stockings. Sometimes a day went by without a meal. His wife was limited to one good dress, and the rest of her wardrobe was hand-me-downs as well (Johnson, 19-1).  However, the Farmers’ Alliance changed the worker’s life because the Alliance movement stood a series of farmers’ cooperatives. By collecting the cotton, and then selling them in a large amount, farmers could bargain for a higher price (Roark, 528). The other example is the Pullman boycott in 1892, which raised fundamental questions about the rights of labor and the sanctity of private property. Industrial workers got higher wages and shorter working hours through strikes and labor wars that were organized by labor unions (Roark, 529)

Despite the problems of inequality, industrialization creates a lot of new job opportunities and industrialists are finding solution to address inequality. For example, America’s first big business is railroad. The railroad magnates put up little of their money to build the roads, and they can make a lot of money. At the same time, it can help a lot of people to find the job because, before the Civil War. The Pennsylvania Railroad by the 1870s boasted a payroll of more than 55,000 employees. So construction of a railroad is to benefit rich people and poor people (Roark, 473). Even the largest textile mill in New England employed no more than 800 workers. The entrepreneur had achieved success through his talent and hard work. This is not to be denied or derided. And Carnegie offers a solution of inequality. To solve the problems, this means that there are decisions regarding its “administration” of the wealth that must be made.

It is argued that great wealth seems to be part and parcel of the capitalist system, especially in the industrial age in Economy class. To an economist, “capital” is not “money” as it is commonly used. Rather, “capital” refers to the machinery, the equipment, the physical plant that is used to produce goods or services. In industrial society, capital requires significant expenditures of money to obtain. Lacking credit, laborers will have difficulty getting sufficient wealth to purchase capital. In the past, artisan based society, capital for a master craftsman might consist of carpenter’s or mason’s or tinker’s tools. For Carnegie, the massive expenses of rail and locomotives and cars and terminals were necessary capital investments. After the Industrial Revolution, workers have reduced working hours, had higher wages, had safer working conditions, and reduced the gap by a little between the wealthy and the poor (Class, 9/22/16).

The birth of the Industrial Revolution changed people's lives; it is unreasonable do a simple analysis on who got more benefit, because they all reaped the benefits, and have their lives changed. Rich people get more money, and labor workers had reduced their working hours, while having the opportunity to be more productive because they get higher wages after the industrial revolution.
