Globalization, a heavily loaded concept, is defined by Anthony McGrew and David Held as a set of process that embodies a transformation in the organization transactions as well as social relations. Globalization is also referred by some authors as a process where social space becomes no longer constrained by territorial places, borders, and distances (Aart, 2005). As the globalization process continue to spread, it is important to study the cause of this phenomenon. Two major elements, the increase in technology and the promotion of free trade, have contributed significantly to the increasingly developed globalization process (Garrett, 2000).

Improved technology has enabled globalization to happen. It is the improvement in technology that removes the barrier of infrastructure to the process of globalization. To be specific, the technology improvement is mostly embodied in the improvement in communication and transportation. In terms of communication, now people enjoy timely communication from all over the world with the help of the Internet. As in the Web2.0 era, where the network spans all connected devices across the world, this enable people from one country to communicate easily and effective with people from another country at the other side of the world and greatly enhances user experience as people get access to multiple resources over the internet (O’Reilly, 2005). The more effective and efficient communication methods and technology facilitates the process of globalization as they allow people to exchange information without borders and distances. In terms of transportation, with the development of a variety of transportation methods including train, airplane, and motor car, people have access to nearly all places around the world and they can travel to different places in several hours. This enables companies to go global and greatly enhances the communication and collaboration among multinational corporations. Thus, the improvement in communication technology and the enhancement in transportation methods both play important roles in facilitating the development of the globalization process. In other words, the improvement in technology led the globalization process to happen.

The promotion of Free Trade Agreement plays an important role in making globalization happens as well. It is the launch of Free Trade Agreement that facilitates the process of globalization. The increasing interest of exporters in broadening their market has had a powerful influence on the trend of liberalization (Garrett, 2000). The Free Trade Agreement facilitates globalization as it removes trade barrier such as quotas and tariffs (Shujiro, 2002). Some examples of the FTAs include the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was established in 1994, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which came into effect in 1992. As the Free Trade Agreements promotes liberalization, it is also considered to facilitate trade liberalization on a global scale. Other regional trading agreements that constitute the Regional Trade Agreements also played a central role in promoting the trend towards regional integration. The increasing depths of these agreements as well as the increase in agreements between countries not only facilitates globalization of goods and services, but also contributes to multiple foreign investments as well as a wide range of areas, including intellectual property, labor mobility, technology development, competition policy, and tourism. However, as the FTAs expand, the participation of nations outside the agreement and the momentum of multilateral trade negotiations should be taken into important consideration in order to successfully manage the global trade and to coordinate the concerns of all countries so that the globalization trend could benefit all countries (Shujiro, 2002). The Free Trade Agreement, which laid the foundation for standardizing global trade, caused the globalization trend to happen.

To conclude, the improvement in technology and the promotion of free trade enables globalization to happen. The improvement in communication technology, the enhancement in transportation methods, and the development of Free Trade Agreement all play important roles in facilitating the development of the globalization process. As the process of globalization develops, it has also impacted the world in terms of the economy, the job market, global culture, as well as global environment. It is recommended that companies keep up with the globalization trend in order to take advantage of its various impacts, such as the promotion of global culture and the increase in job opportunities.
