1. Introduction

Titanic and Patient Zero are the two films I want to compare. Titanic, an impressive love story released in 1997, has successfully moved a lot of people and made a box-office record. With the success of the film, its theme song My Heart Will Go On, which was composed by James Horner, was also widely known. Patient Zero, has been recently released in 2017. Cabin Fever is an incidental music composed by Kevin Riepl, which sounds good to me. Both of the films belong to the scale of disaster film, and their release dates are about 20 years apart. This essay w ill compare and contrast the two songs, and shows some common threads between the styles and scoring approaches of the two composers.

2. A Concise Biographical Sketch of Both Composers

James Horner was an American composer, conductor and orchestrator of film scores. Apart from being well-known for an integration of choral and electronic music, he was also famous for the frequent use of motifs linked to Celtic music. The first major score of James Horner was for the film The Lady in Red in 1979, but he didn’t become an eminent compose until he had composed for the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. James Horner’s score for James Cameron’s Titanic, which has been mentioned in the section of introduction, has remained the best-selling orchestral film score for all time. In addition, Horner also wrote the score for Cameron’s Avatar, the top-grossing film of all time.

Horner cooperated on various projects with several directors including Don Bluth, James Cameron, Joe Johnston, Walter Hill, and Ron Howard, producers such as David Kirschner, Jon Landau, Brian Grazer and Steven Spielberg; and songwriters including Will Jennings, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Horner had composed for more than 100 films in all. He had won Academy Awards for twice, Golden Globes for twice, Satellite Awards for three times and Saturn Awards for three times, and had been nominated for British Academy Film Awards for three times. James Horner died at the age of 61 in a single fatality crash of his aircraft.

Kevin Kiepl was born in Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey. His interest in music started at the age of six, when he began to play piano and guitar under the instruction of his uncle. After high school, he began private independent studies in composition and orchestration at the Village East Conservatory of Music. Following the years at the conservatory and few scoring projects, he attended Mannes College of Musicin New York City for further education in composition and orchestration. Riepl began his career working as an assistant and co-writing partner for Kevin Manthei in the early 2000s. At the time, Cliff Bleszinski, former design director at Epic Games, who was then looking for a different musical sound for the Unreal franchise, played his demo reel. This led him to work on Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Championship 2. In February 2005, Riepl became attached to Gears of War. Initially, he was asked to write the main themes for the game, but after submitting the pieces he had written, Epic liked what he created and signed him on to create the entire score. In March 2007, Riepl recorded the score for the massively multiplayer first-person shooter computer game Huxley, developed by Webzen Games.

In addition to his work on the video game industry, Riepl has composed for films and television series, including his recent scores for horror films such as Silent Night, Contracted and Cabin Fever: Patient Zero.

3. A Brief Introduction of Both Films’ Plots

Titanic is a love story doomed by the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Rose, the 101-year-old heroine, reminiscences her experience of the Titanic and her emotional connection with another passenger, Jack. Jack was an American starving artist who won a trip home on the Ship of Dreams to a lucky hand in poker. His luck unfortunately ran out on April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg in the northern Mid-Atlantic. Four days before the unsinkable ship began to fill with ice cold sea water, Rose and Jack's love story began. Rose was supposed to marry her mother's selected gentlemen Cal Hockley, who was only attracted to Rose by her beauty and family fortune. Rose however felt she was in a crowded room screaming for help with no one to hear. Jack did hear her, with someone to finally listened, Rose couldn't deny her feelings for Jack anymore. Their love came to a new level, when Rose asked Jack to draw her like one of his "French girls" wearing only the rarest diamond, the Heart of the Ocean. A fun filled, romantic love affair between Jack and Rose couldn't be denied and Cal's pockets began to feel empty and he became jealous of Jack searching for a way to compromise Rose's love for Jack. The Titanic then collides with a large iceberg and begins to sink. As the ship lowers itself into the depths of the ocean, Jack and Rose must fight death of the freezing water and await a rescue ship. 84 years later Rose hears of the Titanic and the discovery of her drawing and meets with the explorers, her memories are where our story begins. The Titanic is a powerful love story that will never let go of the hearts of the people around the world.

Patient Zero tells a story of a man with the ability to speak the language of the undead interrogates zombies with the hopes of finding Patient Zero and a cure for his infected wife. In the pandemic thriller, Patient Zero, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected, leading the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure.

Both of two films are disaster films with tense plot. In addition, love is a forever thread throughout both films. That’s two parallels lying between them.

4. Analysis of Both Scores

My Heart Will Go On, the theme song of Titanic, was composed by James Horner and Will Jennings who had been enlightened by the impressive love story between Rose and Jack in the film. My Heart Will Go On is an excellent song with perfectly arranged musical structure. Most of its tone is E major. The rhythm changes from the initial mild to later excitement, and then arrives at high tide, and keeps moving until the sorrow end of the story. Irish whistle had been adopted in the prelude of the song. In term of the verse, both Irish whistle and bagpipe are used. Both of two orchestrations sound melodious, breaking up sweetly, which fits the plot the film perfectly.

Cabin Fever follows a group of five college graduates who rent a cabin in the woods. Soon, all hell breaks loose, as the group fall victim to a flesh-eating virus that attracts the unwanted attention of homicidal locals. Kevin Riepl’s Carbin Fever Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which adopts water phones to add the tense feeling for the film, In addition, it also uses guitar as its orchestration.
