Recently I went to the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art. MOCA is one of the most important art galleries in the United States with the largest collection of post World War II art objects in the United States, the number of collections is about seven thousand pieces. These collections including paintings, sculptures, installations and new media works such as videos.
If you locate MOCA on Google Maps, there will be a total of three places - MOCA Grand Avenue across the board from another goddess-like art gallery in Los Angeles, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA near Little Tokyo, and MOCA Pacific Design Center. Los Angeles downtown is chaotic, the Grand Avenue where The Board and MOCA Grand are located is a relatively lean area of the city center.
Now on display at the MOCA is a large retrospective of the Italian-born Brazilian artist Anna Maria Maiolino. This is the first time her works in such a large scale in the United States. The exhibition covers a wide range of works from the 1960s to the present, including comprehensive painting, clay installations, video, cement sculpture and other dimensions, a variety of sizes of works.
Anna was born in Italy in 1942.As a result of the fall of World War II in Europe, she immigrated to Italy from Italy with her parents in 1954, then studied in Brazil and settled in Brazil. Loneliness runs through her life because of the sense of isolation that her immigrant identity brings, interwoven with her later experiences of becoming a mother and a world citizen, shaping each piece of her work. Such as the above piece of work, grandmother, mother and daughter, three generations connected by a thin line. Looks like a very simple action but makes people feel strong love by mother, and this love is passing from generation to generation.
As one of the most important contemporary artists in Brazil, the most unique personal feature of her works is the use of curly clay devices to represent everyday personal, social and linguistic issues. And through the work express short and fragile evaluation of creation.
In the 1960-1970 period, ANNA was contemplating the relationship between language and body. She thought that mouth was a wonderful thing because it served as both a "tool" for eating and speaking, it is the intersection of language with the human body, culture and nature. Her debut exhibition “Between Senses” with Hauser & Wirth in New York is a testament of the Brazilian-based artist’s continuous search for identity in her multidisciplinary works.
By the middle of the 1970s, Anna began experimenting with hand stitching, paper cut, collage and use multi-layer approach to creating these works on the “3D works”. At this moment, the identity of Anna as a mother began to show more and more obvious. She substitutes everyday activities in the field of art creation.
In the early 1990s, she first hand-casts sculptures using materials such as cement and plaster. Later, she discovered the clay which is a great material, with the help of this material she made larger works. She is good at using curly clay installations to suggest everyday things in the personal, social and linguistic contexts and to express short and fragile appraise of creation through her works. The clay installation on display this time is said to have come to Los Angeles personally, using the soil here for this exhibition. The scale is so big that you can’t trust these works all finished by a 70 years old granny alone.
Anna loves clay, because in her hands clay is the flour in the kitchen and can sublimate from one thing to another. Like a dumpling, spaghetti, she squeezes the clay into a variety of shapes, densely arranged on the tabletop or glued to the wall, a separate halls that seem to instantly become a mom's kitchen.
The end of the exhibition is Anna some of the paper drawings and paper sew, size is not large, but it is also very cute yet.
After nearly 50 years of artistic creation, Anna Maria Maiolino established a wide international reputation. In 2001, she held a personal retrospective at the Sketch Center in New York, where she organized a personal retrospective in 2005 and 2006 respectively at Esta Gallery in Sao Paulo and the Miami Museum of Modern Art in the United States.
