Being the last feudal autocratic dynasty in Chinese history, the Ch’ing Period has received more comments than optimistic and critics. However, when it comes to the prospect of its tremendous contribution to the foundation of a new China, I would say, I agree with the author in that the Ch’ing Dynasty is inevitable in formation of a new country. To explain that, I would manifest the roles the Ch’ing dynasty has payed in the Chinese history.
Firstly, the peace and prosperity constructed by conquer during the Ch’ing period set the base of a huge population for the country, which is a critical element both for the formation of a new country and the revolution of the society. Population has long been considered as the fundamental strength of a country, it decides the totality of the country’s power, making the very slight of one individual to gather into a huge amount of a whole country. A large population allows a country to develop in a fast speed and build a comprehensive social construction. And according to the records, the population of China almost tripled itself from 150 million to 420 million during the Ch’ing period as a consequence o a prolonged peace and prosperity, which is an amazing truth no matter to any other country in the world. During the very early period of the Republic of China, the large population revealed its importance in fighting the wars, conducting campaigns as well as building compulsory facilities in a short time, which also guaranteed the stability of the new society. This large population pushed the agricultural as well as the commercial development of China, as more people are born, more living necessities are needed, so that people have to invent tools and discover new methods that would help rise the productive efficiency and amount. In the trend of larger demands of commercial and trade, the early form of capitalism was then born. And the emergence of early capitalism in China accords with the logical law of development and revolution of society, as it was a demand of social progress. This also explains the reason why the feudal autocratic system finally failed the in foregoing wheel of Chinese history. The new country, even though was given another name and conduct a new system of policy, the land and people stayed somehow. So that the population brought by conquer of Ch’ing dynasty played an important role in directing and building up the newly built society.
Secondly, the decay of the Ch’ing government led to Chinese people’s recognition of their falling behind in the modern world, which aroused their struggle to fight against in order to stay safe in the modern world. Though the Ch’ing Dynasty indeed experienced a prolonged period of peace and prosperity in its early time and was fairly proud of its state in the world, it received tremendous ignominious insulations from the much more advanced western world in the end. The government was almost forced to open the country to the foreigners and they were so surprised to witness the modern weapons using their own eyes. Before that, they didn’t realize the thing that was happening in some remote lands and refused stepping forward in the field of technology. Such movements could be lethal, as the their stubborn thoughts of their status in the world hindered them from developing and other countries would also trigger wars to fight for the title. However, such disasters did happen, but it was not too late for Chinese to realize their fault and struggle for solution. They started to save themselves by learning the technology from the western world, which is logically helpful, but in reality not really worked. They came to aware that the only way out was to develop the way that fitted the situation of China, and this was exactly what they attempted to conduct in order to save the country. It is also very ironic to say that if they missed the chance to realize how behind they had fell in the modern world, they wouldn’t have built up the new country of China. Instead, the country could be colonized by the western countries. So that the corruption of the Ch’ing dynasty provided a chance for people to seek for help to protect the nation and its people.
There is one old saying in the Chinese language as “It is unknown whether a bad thing would bring something good, nor would a good thing”. It is true that the Ch’ing period has brought wars and conflicts for its people, but behind those disasters were progresses and developments left to be conducted. The new China wouldn’t be built like today without the foundation of Ch’ing dynasty.
