Introduction
Increasingly advanced and developed is the whole world in one way or another, nowadays information technology has already become a new concept in people’s life due to the scientific and technological breakthrough. There is no doubt that information technology has changed human beings’ life in various aspects and the great majority of human beings have personally experienced the endless benefits information technology has brought. Since Will Allen (2012) has strived all his life on how to provide healthy food for each and every person and he has also focused on his healthy, good food which should be pretty ‘green’ in The Good Food Revolution, I wonder whether information technology can bring any benefit toward food safety. In order to know clearly about whether information technology can really bring any benefit toward food safety, a research has been conducted by me on that. After the research, I have found that information technology can definitely improve food safety to a certain degree, which will be elaborated on in the following.
Information Technology Can Definitely Improve Food Safety
First and foremost comes that information technology can help prevent a series of foodborne illnesses so as to improve food safety to a certain degree. In the paper called Food Safety Working Group: Definitely in the 21st Century, Eddle Gehman Kohan (2009) has, at the first place, mentioned the outbreak of some foodborne diseases and the large number of family members of those foodborne disease victims. After this, he puts forward that it is urgent and necessary to lead people to prevent from those foodborne diseases as well as ensure food safety. In order to give people some concrete suggestions on how to improve food safety, Eddle Gehman Kohan (2009) has listed some detailed food safety approaches in the meantime, among which it includes using new technologies to communicate critical food safety information by creating an improved individual alert system as emphasizes on the significance of information technology toward food safety. Detailed speaking, Eddle Gehman Kohan (2009) states that the federal government will mainly take well advantage of the website www.foodsafety.gov to more effectively deliver information to the wide public and an improved individual alert system will be applied so that the consumers can timely receive food safety information. He adds that some relevant agencies will expand public communications via the usage of all kinds of possible social media forms, contributing to the improvement of food safety to a certain degree.
The same as Eddle Gehman Kohan, Alexa Nameth (2010) has also in his study put forward that better use of information technology can help reduce the incidence of the next big foodborne illness outbreak because public officials are able to identify and trace outbreaks faster owing to IT innovations. And it is also pointed out that information technology enables public research to study about the reported symptoms of undiagnosed or unreported illnesses so as to protect human beings from getting a certain kind of foodborne illness in the end. What is good news for the great majority of human beings is that FDA will continue to develop new technologies for quickly capturing, analyzing and sharing data on foodborne pathogens via an interactive web-based system as will be updated from time to time afterwards. Besides, Alexa (2010) has especially taken agriculture as an example to express that the usage of information technology in farming has paved way for monitoring moisture and soil conditions so as to minimize the rate of the happening of foodborne illness. In the end, Alexa (2010) has concluded that IT has played a significant role in detecting, monitoring and responding to public health threats and ensuring the safety of people’s food supply.
Moreover, Katie Moore (2016) focuses on talking about three waves of technology-driven revolution in manufacturing industries, during which she respectively refers to the arrival of manufacturing resource planning systems, the explosion of the Internet together with the appearance of the Industrial Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT). What Katie Moore (2016) would like to deliver is that thanks to technology, the manufacturing industries have improved in many aspects, which primarily include the below ones: automotive; television; big data; retail; 3D printing; food quality; food safety etc. Blankly speaking, with the appearance of the Internet and the television, the great majority of people can know more or less about the problem of food safety in the society so that their awareness toward food safety can be improved at the same time. And the appearance and updating of technologies can make people qualified enough to supply food with high quality so as to reduce the rate of foodborne illness, leading to people’s easily getting away from many kinds of foodborne illnesses as a result. The author keeps an optimistic attitude toward the development of food safety and she holds the firm belief that a new wave of technology-driven revolution in manufacturing industries is around the corner for further improving food quality and ensuring food safety.
What comes next is what has been expressed by Carla, McFarlane (2016) that the usage of 3M Canada innovates can improve food safety in that this system can provide an accurate, cost-effective, easy-to-use and fast measure to detect dangerous foodborne pathogens all the time so as to allow concerned parties to search for possible methods to efficiently respond to pathogens as are fatal enough to shut down business and threaten public health. The reason why the 3M Canada innovates can act a part in ensuring food safety in Carla, McFarlane (2016) lies in that it can apply the combination of unique technologies like isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence detection, contributing to its accuracy and reliability in guaranteeing food quality. Though what matters in this paper is just one kind of technology called the 3M Canada innovates which are only used in the country Canada rather than all the countries all over the world, it is still one powerful justification that the usage of information can really bring some benefits toward the improvement of food safety. What can not be denied is that if information technology is not used in a correct and wise way, it might not bring the supposed benefits toward food safety. Thus we can have a fair knowledge that management innovation and information technology is required for the better and more organized usage of information technology in the food industries. For instance, Jin, Maozhu and Du, Zhenyu (2014) have proposed the necessity of the management toward innovation and information technology and they two have even expressed what a good way is to apply information technology and how the ordinary people should use information technology for the sake of food safety. In their book, they have also involved the information technology as well as in other industries apart from the food industry.
Conclusion
To sum up, we can easily draw a conclusion that information technology can really improve food safety. And what we human beings should do is to get ourselves familiar with the use of information technology so that we can successfully ensure our own food safety as well as that of our beloved ones. As long as we can ensure our food safety, we can smoothly avoid the incidence of some foodborne illnesses and we can live a happy and healthy life at last.
