My Argumentation for the Reasons to Study Humanities

现在越来越多学生选择学习理工科方便以后就业,人文学科少人问津,作者从这现象剖解大学生应该多学习人文学科的理由。

Nowadays, more and more students came to universities for engineering, computer science, physics, pre-med, finance, digital music production, etc. They don’t see the point of learning humanities has nothing to do with their careers. I am also among these students. However, after reading about the essay of Why Study Humanities? What I Tell Engineering Freshmen., recommended by my tutor, my idea has changed. After a consultation to some related materials, I find the importance of education of humanities. I want to share my opinions with you. In this essay, my arguments focus on three aspects. The first aspect is the current status of humanities studies in many universities. The second aspect is the importance of education of humanities. I will also argue about whether the scientific students should learn courses of humanities. The third aspect is my suggestions for education of humanities in our university.  

Current Situation for the Education of Humanities
The basic function of university is to cultivate talents for the society. So except for the professional education, university is also a place for students to cultivate healthy personalities and establish correct outlooks on life. In America where its higher education is more developed than other countries, education of humanities is very popular.( Stewart 93-103)For example, in Yale, history study is a very popular major. There are more than 90 teachers in the department of history. From this data, we can see that, this university values a lot about the education of humanities. The reason is that universities are places to educate well-rounded persons. So the quality of liberal education decides the education qualities, and education of humanities accounts for the core status. (Thomas 4-5).

Since that humanities used to be the core of traditional education, humanities will not find it hard to defense for themselves. Literatures can teach the students about the function of recognition, education, aesthetic and entertainment; Philosophers can teach the students about the fact that it can help to cultivate their views on world and life; Historians can illustrate about the relationship between historical science and country, society and life. Take the course of history as an example. Human beings need history. From the history, people can know where we come from, where we are now and where we are going to. History is an important basis for our modern people to acquire time sense. Students who value about the history will learn from it and what they have learned will guide their future life. Another example is about political philosophy. .Political philosopher, Rawls once remarked that, in every civilization, people should consider these problems. This kind of exploration has its own values. What’s more, without this kind of philosophic consideration, a society cannot be called as a society. From this, we can see the importance of philosophy to the political philosopher. As mentioned above, the education of humanities can reflect the success of a university in certain degree. 

The Importance of Education of Humanities
Different with the natural sciences and social sciences, education of humanities does not aim to increase students’ knowledge, instead, it aims to teach the students to be good persons. It teaches us to think rationally. This kind of thinking way cannot be calculated by numbers or analyzed by computers. Human beings are complex animals. They are complexions of sensibility, emotion, imagination, creativity, desire and so on. Then I will tell the readers about the important of education of humanities and argue that scientific students should also learn about humanities. 

First, education of humanity is as important as academic education. Scientific subjects study on the material world. This kind of study is essential since it will help us to know better about the material world. Once we know about it, we can make good use of it and then change it appropriately. However, people value too much about the scientific subjects but neglect the education of humanities. They value about rationality instead of emotionality; analytical thinking instead of intuition; conceptual knowledge instead of perceptual knowledge; material world instead of spiritual world. This will result that in colleges the exploration of material field and spiritual field are imbalanced. However, exploration of spiritual world is of great significance since it can enhance people’s spiritual life. Spiritual civilization will push the development of material civilization and enhance the productivity. So humanities, including philosophy, economics, politics, history, literature, linguistics and a series of subjects, can not only enhance human beings’ spiritual life but also push the renovation of material world. (Okud and Denise 98-107) OkudaAccording to the research on the scientific students, we can see that, they have few ideas about the cultures and narrow knowledge. From the level of philosophy, people can have a deep thought on the importance of humanities. We tend to learn things from complex experience. Actually no matter in which era, we have to master the essence of things if we want to study on them. In my opinion, the education of humanities is very important to cultivate students’ ability to conduct philosophic reflection. Once we master this kind of philosophic critical thinking ability, we can make breakthrough in the study of certain field and the application of certain subject. 

Second, the education of humanities can help us to form correct value orientation. If we are well equipped with professional knowledge but lack of immorality, we will derivate from the objective of education. So the moral philosophy which studies on moral values and behaviors; aesthetics which studies on the value of beauty and art; behavioral science which studies on the spiritual phenomenon and mind activities; these are all important humanities that we should learn. For example, for medical students, even though they are scientific students, it is also very important for them to receive education of humanities.(Levi 45-49) Nowadays, in China, the relationship between doctors and patients is very tense. The lack and absence of education of humanities in medical colleges has resulted that a lot of medical students are of low humanistic qualities. Their lacking of humanistic care will reflect in their daily services for the patients. This is an important factor that influences the relationship between doctors and patients. If the humanistic qualities are not enhanced, the tense relationship cannot be dealt with. So we can see that the education of humanities in medical schools is of important and profound significance. My suggestions for Education of Humanities in Our University
My first suggestion is that scientific major students should also learn a few courses of humanities. My second suggestion is that courses of psychology, history and moral philosophy should be accessible for students in our university. Because these courses will help to build our thinking way, promote us to know about us and cultivate our historical thinking abilities. These will help us to value present time and hope for future. It will benefit for students to form a good value orientation. My third suggestion is that lectures about humanities should be hold in our universities. Attractive lectures will not only broaden students’ horizon but also enrich our extracurricular activities. My fourth suggestion is a combination of humanistic education and academic education. My fifth suggestion is to make good use of library. I wish that our library can recommend books or movies about humanities to us. It may be a good way to attract our attention by educating us artfully.
