The meaning of the Punk subculture

Errickson (1999) stated that plenty of youth subcultures appeared in Britain throughout its recent history: the Teddy Boys, the Mods and Rockers, the Skinheads and the Punks. Punks  represent a group of people who do things that are different from the general public and who yearn for freedom and pursue it. As the tenet,“Do It Yourself” indicates  their special spirit and it is this spirit that result in a huge commercial market for Punks.

The special background ---economy recession and its related responses created the appearance of punk. This was because in such situation,  people , especially young people , would respond to it in their own way . “Punk arose in England during 1976 in the midst of a terrible recession that appeared to many English youth as the failure of the British socio-economic system” (Kenneth J. Bindas 1993). Errickson (1999) also mentioned that “The punk movement grew out of this drab and dark environment ready to challenge the status quo and show their contempt for government, society and tradition.”   In the1970s, Britain had a poor economy and unemployment rate was declined. “The New Statesman estimated that 35 percent of those under twenty-five years of age were unemployed. After graduation at sixteen, thousands of young people immediately went on the dole, which quickly symbolized the problems in Britain” (Kenneth J. Bindas 1993). People had a lot of pressure and indulge themselves in drugs and alcohol. Within this kind of situation, young people feel very resentful and used the “naked” way to express them. Quite different from the usual image of gentlemen, Punks just use simple and rough ways to catharsis their negative emotion without any content. Punks became a youth subculture with the flue of economic failure.  It can be regarded as a creation of such failure to express young people’s upset and confusing emotions and their yearn for freedom and contempt for society and tradition.

Even though the emerge of Punk subculture seems to go with the flow, its process is not as smooth as the emerge, including some ups and downs. Start with 1970s, Punks subculture is not easy to “survive” in the society with a main culture. And even, Punks subculture was a derogatory term at the beginning. Then, with the in-depth comprehension and transform of people’s value,   it aroused more and more people to join in this group in those days. Nowadays, Punks subculture not only a kind of uprising, but also provide a lot of commercial value. Nowadays, Punks subculture is largely characterized by anti-establishment views and the promotion of individual freedom. It sprung from punk rock music, includes a diverse array of ideologiesfashions and forms of expression, including visual art, dance, literature and film. Punks Subculture has commercial value to a certain extent and full of meaning. Thus, after a short time of depress , Punk subculture gained its spring and even made some commercial contribution via the  spirits it expresses.

The Punks was originally begun in the music industry. In the article Interpreting Punk Rock, Dave Laing (1978) said “Punk Rock was first applied to a school of teenage rock music in America inspired by the style of the British groups led by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.” The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are the two representative groups that popular among young people from 1970s to now. However, another punk rock band called The Clash, which formed of four young men, condemned the rockers’ adoption of capitalist business attitudes. The Clash became a leader of the fragmented movement and move punk ideology beyond the Pistols’ anarchic rage in the late 1970s (Kenneth J. Bindas 1993).

Admittedly, its origin was music; the most significant is it bred a potential commercial market.  The Punk Rock music market was large and Punk Rock music promoted the development of the Punk style of dressing market as well. The Punk style of dressing is exaggerated like Bohemia style. Both of them are unacceptable to the general public but its commercial value could not be neglected . Furthermore, the commercial value of Punks has been expressed  in the arts and literature areas. Therefore, in various areas, the commercial contribution from Punk subculture could be testified.

How can it produce so many commercial values? Why did it seems to be so appealing for the customers in different areas? And what is the deep cause for its welcoming? In his article, Errickson (1999) pointed out the contributions of Punks. “Punks, as a subculture of angry youth have done a lot to raise the consciousness of those with the power and ability to do something about some of the social and political injustices the punks react against every day. Punk, more than anything else relies on the tenet of “Do It Yourself,” (DIY).” In the article Punk: The Do-It-Yourself Subculture, author Moran (2011) explained that the do it yourself aspect is one of the most significant factors fueling the subculture and it kept the Punk Subculture alive since the late 1970s. Although the Punk live a different way of life than the general public, and like to challenge culture and customs , they do have significant existence in society today. That is to say, it is the tenet of  “Do It Yourself,” (DIY)” that counts.  After all, we live in a society filled with pressure ,changes and competitions which force the spirit appears to be more important to live a satisfied life.

However, should we always encourage this tenet or spirit ? I do not think the answer is affirmative. One one thing, we need to give up some freedom to be responsible for something and to abide by the tradition as expected. One the other, the risk of freedom should also be evaluated sometimes since we are adults and we should be responsible for our actions. Family and parental relationship is a good example. Learning to accept responsibility is one of the three cornerstones of becoming adults. “learning to accept responsibility for yourself means taking over responsibility that had previously been assumed by your parents and no longer expecting your parents to shoulder the responsibility for the consequences of things you have done”. It is obvious that there are some risks for the “do it yourself” and we should be responsible for our behaviors , risks included. Besides, we might move in and out and in again to live with our parents, which means more responsibility we should shoulder during this process. Although we might need not always follow parents’ requirement, more things should be considered to treat them better which might result in  lack of freedom to some extent. Thus, in such situation , we have to comply by the tradition rather than just be anti about it or always pursue that spirit.

Therefore, there are still some question that need further research. For example, realizing how to encourage this spirit and what is the proper situation to encourage this spirit is important.  In addition, knowing how to deal with the relationship between  true freedom and control is the prerequisite for the pursue of freedom . Also, how to remain Punk’s pure spirit in the future rather than just follow the commercial tendency or even how to prevent its spirit being gave up or changed   in order to cater for the market demand is a urgent question.

In short, economically, Punk music, dress, literature and arts can provide commercial values, especially the Punk Rock music which had become a kind of music that never out of date. Moreover, such economical contribution stems from the  spirits it expresses, making it is worth studying. Do It Yourself is the most representative one. In this changing world, there are too many people drifting and lost on their way. It is a very rare quality to challenge the world bravely. However, we also need to grasp a control for freedom  in some special situation since it might be difficult to be free and to do whatever we want  at any time and place .
