As one of the most striking ancient Greek tragedy, Oedipus Tyrannus is a masterpiece about fighting with fate. The play describes the story of Oedipus’ struggle with fate.

In the first plot, the playwright introduces the background the time and society, which is also the beginning of the story. Oedipus is the ruler of Thebes. At that time, Thebes is suffering from natural disaster and people have to bear hunger. They hope that their king, Oedipus can pull them out of hunger and poverty. As a good king, Oedipus asks his uncle, his mother’s brother to pray for God’s tips. The result is that he has to clear out pollution in Thebes, which means that to find out a murderer who killed the former king and expelled him. Then the story begins.

In the process of finding out the murderer, Oedipus meets Teiresias, a blind prophet, under his uncle’s introduction. Teiresias tells Oedipus that he is exactly the murderer of his father. Of course Oedipus does not believe those words and doubted whether his uncle has something to do with her father’s death. Thus, Oedipus and his uncle argue fiercely. His wife, her uncle’s sister stops them and tells him a truth that the former king and she had ever abandoned their son because they heard the Teiresias said their son would kill him and marry her. Jocasta, the queen, comforts Oedipus not to believe the Prophet because the former king was killed by some robbers but Oedipus was known to be prince of Koran Torth.

However, Oedipus decides to find out his true identity because he once left his country and killed some passers-by. At that time, a drunk laughed at him that he was not the real son the country. In order to find out the truth and prove the “fallacy”, Oedipus asked the God for the help. But God told him that he would kill her father and marry her mother. To avoid such a strategy, he left his country. And now all he needs to confirm the number of killers murdering the former king. At that time, a messenger informed the death the king of Koren Torth and also told him that he is not the real son of Koren Torth. Instead, he was adopted by the messenger, when he said that Oedipus’s ankles were pierced with rivets. On hearing the fact, Jocastas gets mad and killed herself because she found that Oedipus is her son as well as husband. She cannot bear such a fact. However, Oedipus reacts differently. He bravely admits such a fact but blinds himself because he does not want to see the scenes in Thebes. He said that “I will still want to uncover the secret of my birth----no matter how terrible”. He is such a brave man. But all his fighting with fate ends in failure. His uncle’s last word, “Your power has not survived with you”, declares his strategy.
