1.The present situation of the clothing market
China is a big country with 1.3 billion people, so it has a very large market in the aspect of clothing. The clothing industry in China has a larger development in these years, and its development greatly promotes Chinese national economic development.
Along with the social progress and continuous development, the rules of popular costume designing are also changing; the huge market decides the development direction of our clothing. In the clothing industry, market plays a decisive role for fashion.
Clothing is indispensible goods in human life, and it collectively embodies the relation of contradiction and unity between beauty of formalism and function of use and object of use in the process of designing, making and using (Sandra Niessen et al., 2003). Due to the university and decoration of clothing and raiment, the trend to the clothing design in a country or a region often collectively reflects the trend of people’s designing concepts and designing procedures in this region.
2. The concept of fashion
Fashion means “worshiping” something in certain “time” or a long “time”; also means “it is too earlier, long time to worship”, including the two meanings. In one word, it is something that can be able to advocate or demonstrate. Fashion is the lifestyle that is experienced by a few people and later worshiped and imitated by the public in certain period of time. In this very simplified meaning, fashion s the life worshiped by some people in short time. For example: mini-skirt was popular in 1980s; the physical exercise of “hula hoop” appeared in 1990s and “body painting”. These styles once were very popular, and then retired after a certain time, this is so called popular fashion.
Classic fashion not only is the concept of vogue, but the concept of classic tradition. Vogue gives people a feeling of vanity and brevity; but perfect vogue can reserve forever, and become classics, never outdate. For example: Benz, BMW; LV, and so on. These brands never outdate, keep fashion for ever, and they come from accumulation of sense of history. Perfect results in generations forever, that are classics, fashion at that time, and classics at this time, then become imperishable classic fashion.
Clothing, as requisite wearing goods of human, has always been paid much attention (Stella & Pamels, 2000). It collectively embodies the relation of contradiction and unity between beauty of formalism and function of use and object of use in the process of designing, making and using.
No matter how the trends change, it always to be determined by the clothing itself. Of course, designers play particularly great roles in it. They change with the trends, change themselves with the times in every season, and make every effort to make them stand in the forefront of the trend. But some people attract fixed fans with the trick of “Counter changes with changelessness”, and catch up the trend of this season, though without any effort, it becomes the most in-trend in current season, however, it needs extraordinary effect to sustain popularity.
However, in present, market is a more important role in fashion. Designers must pay more attention to the reflection of the market to their designing.
3. How fashion caters to the market demand?
In today’s brand designing, the market is absolutely dominant, and all brands are trying to accomplish this task: How to make customers feel that not only this season’s clothing can be a better price, while maintaining the brand itself a leader of fashion? Therefore, designers take everything they could and cope up with the fight by their main weapons, whatever returning to the old classics, or respond to the popular taste, they cast all caution aside but with do-or-die momentum to present particular exciting new season for us.
When people satisfy with the style of their clothing, namely fashion, their needs will grow, and that will stimulate the consumption. In other words, the market will be expanded due to the fashion. So if want more markets, designers must make every effort to cater to the market and customers’ demands.
