Jing Wu Men, also known as Fist of Fury in English, is a Hong kong martial arts film directed by Lo Wei in 1972, with Bruce Lee stars in it. The film tells a story of a young man Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee), who seeks vengeance for his teacher and defends for the honor of his people. This film is featured with Bruce Lee’s classic Kong Fu and themes of patriotism and individual heroism.
The background of this film is set in early 20th century Shanghai, a time when China faces foreign aggression. The story began when Chen Zhen returned to Jingwu School to marry his fiancee, but only to find that his teacher Huo Yuanjia had died. When a bunch of people from Japanese dojo came to taunt the Jingwu students at Huo’s funeral and humiliated them with a “gift” bearing the words “Sick Man of East Asia”, Chen was furious with them. Later Chen came to the Japanese dojo alone and defeated all the proteges with his fist, and he forced them to eat the paper bearing some derogatory words. When Chen found out that his teacher died not from illness but from a plot designed by the Japanese, he killed several people who had taken part it and hung them outside to show his anger. The furious Japanese then came to Jingwu School and kill everyone inside. They threatened to destroy the school if Chen didn’t show up. In the end, Chen turned himself in while making a flying kick to the numerous gunshots waiting for him.
Jing Wu Men is a classic martial arts film starred by Bruce Lee, featured with strong patriotism and individual heroism. By presenting the conflicts between the weak Chinese and the well-equipped foreign colonists, Jing Wu Men is successful in provoking patriotism. For example, there is a scene when Chen is refused by a guard to enter a park due to a sign that forbids dogs and Chinese in the park, Chen beats him and breaks the sign. This scene shows the weakness of the nation as well as Chen’s passion and fearlessness. Apart from Bruce Lee’s intense performance of martial arts, this film is characterized with a strong anti-Japanese propaganda, as there is no single pleasant Japanese in this film. In depicting the conflicts between the cunning Japanese and the upright Chinese, this film succeeds in provoking patriotism.
The film is also sufficed with a kind of individual heroism, in which the hero acts alone and kicks a crowd of evil by using only his fists, feet and nunchakus. Comparing with the hero, other characters seem to be rather flat without many personalities. For example, the other students in Jingwu School are silent when facing humiliation and only Chen stands out and fights alone to save his people’s honor. In this way it emphasizes the individual charm of the hero by degrading others. But I think this kind of individual heroism presented in this film is rather naive, if we consider the idea to rely on one single person to save the nation. That’s probably why the story ends in tragic. After all, a nation can’t be saved only by individual strength.
