Introduction
Macbeth appears to be a loyal and worthy thane and he transfers from what is good to evil. That is to say, he is not inherently evil and he gradually changes to be evil under the influence of others. Therefore this essay would like to explore Macbeth’s not being inherently evil but his gradually changing to be evil from the following three aspects: Macbeth’s contemplating the murder of Duncan, Macbeth’s killing Duncan and finishing the deed and Macbeth’s slaughtering Macduff’s whole family.
Macbeth Was Not Inherently Evil
Firstly, Macbeth’s contemplating the murder of Duncan can show his being good in the first beginning. When he is told by the witches that he can get promotions to Thane of Cawdor, he just ponders the murder of Duncan. The sentence that “My thought, whose murder is yet fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function is smothered in surmise and nothing but what is not” (William Shakespeare. 1992) can well show Macbeth’s idea to murder Duncan. These tendencies are only thoughts at present, Macbeth needs more motivation to get him to believe the prophecy in fanatical fashion.
However, Macbeth’s killing Duncan and finishing the deed happens at the urge of his wife. He hesitates on the murder while he does get the extra push he needs when his wife shames him because he is still hesitating in murdering Duncan, which can be seen from the expression that “I go, and it is done. The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell. That summons. Thee to heaven, or to hell” (William Shakespeare. 1992). At the same time, Macbeth presents his emerging brutality to the man he once served and loved by suggesting that he may go to hell, which is a result of his wife’s motivation.
Furthermore, he becomes increasingly evil when he slaughters Macduff’s whole family. In fact, he reaches the height of the evil within himself when he slaughters Macduff’s whole family. “Seize upon Fife, give to the edge o the sword his wife, his babes and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line” (William Shakespeare. 1992). But he finds that the behavior of killing Macduff’s whole family does make no sense at all because Macduff is the problem and there is nothing to do with Macduff’s family.
Conclusion
To sum up, a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that Macbeth is not inherently evil while he becomes increasingly evil from the below three incidents: Macbeth ponders the murder of Duncan, he really kills Duncan and he slaughters Macduff’s whole family. There is no doubt that many other aspects can also be used to justify for Macbeth’s not being inherently evil that have not been mentioned, which calls for further discoveries.
