The development of densely populated areas invented by human beings with the name of “city” is going to determine the fate of the human. As suggested by the article, modern cities are fully capable of satisfying all the needs of human beings. Meanwhile, the establishment of urban areas are going have increased gravity of financial resources, natural resources, and talent. As a result, a continuous stream of people will enter the city to seek opportunities, further contributing to the growth of cities. However, it is questionable whether the metropolitan style is the optimal way of human development. And people around the globe certainly shouldn’t stop exploring new modes.

According to Joan Clos, “We need cities and human settlements that are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” However, the increasing scale of cities is going to pose serious challenges in these areas. In response to such challenges, the human living environment has evolved dramatically in the past decades, switching from agriculture-intensive to the focus on mass production, consumption and service. Although metropolitans are highly efficient ways of resource allocation and development, it is questionable whether such a mode of development is sustainable and the optimal choice in the long term. The concentration of resources is actually an unnaturally mode compared to the balanced way of development. There is little ecosystem in urban areas, and the huge amount of resource consumption and pollution are destroying the nature.

Large cities isolate human beings from the nature and place them in a routine lifestyle. Meanwhile, it also makes individuals more dependent on the conveniences provided by the services of urban areas, significantly diminishing people’s “survival” abilities. Concentrated areas are also more susceptible to natural disasters. For example, there will be greater losses for a densely populated area in an earthquake. With the improved infrastructure, transportation, and management, I believe the new modes of sustainability with network of smaller cities with specialized functions are worth exploring.
