The "Pygmalion effect" was created in 1968 by researchers Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobsen. Their work shows that people who receive positive feedback perform well. People who received negative feedback performed poorly (Spiegel, 2017). In other words, praise, trust, and expectations are a kind of energy that can change people's behavior. When a person is trusted and praised by others, he will feel the support of society. It will enhance self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem.
The "Pygmalion effect" is the result of a test by American psychologist Rosenthal. He randomly selected 18 college students as a sample, wrote their names in a form, and gave them to the principal, and told the principal seriously that these 18 students were all intellectual talents. When Rosen returned to school half a year later, he found that the performance of 18 students was indeed better than average. Many years later, these 18 people have made extraordinary achievements in their respective positions.
The experimenter believed that after receiving the hint, the principal not only placed higher expectations on the students on the list, but also naturally or semi-unconsciously shifted the implicit expectations of these students through facial expressions, recognition and guidance. Students give positive feedback to the teacher in return. This feedback in turn stimulates the teacher's greater enthusiasm for education, helps maintain the original expectations, and gives more care to the students. This cycle continues to make students' intelligence, academic performance, and social behavior closer to the teacher's expectations, making the expectations come true.
We can find that in daily life, we are all surrounded by this influence, which changes our growth, from positive or negative influences. I found that my mother is a good example. Since I was a little interested in cooking, she began to cast psychological hints to me, and she was very confident in my cooking talent. She keeps telling me that the things I make are delicious. This method is very authentic and I am very confident and creative every day. Now my cooking skills are getting better and better. Therefore, I am very interested in the Rosenthal effect.
Especially those who are not strong enough or firm enough are more susceptible to this influence, because they need to rely on the affirmation of others to gain self-confidence. One of my classmates is very introverted. He was praised by the teacher before class and dared to show up in front of everyone. She gained confidence and gained momentum. I think praise, trust, and expectation have an energy that can change a person's behavior, provide positive motivation, and help people meet the expectations of others. Therefore, the "Rosenthal effect" is very important to our lives.
