Abstract
The subject of the paper is the importance of tertiary education. The narrowed topic is whether or not tertiary education should be pursued for every high school student. I found distinguished journals for information on returns of tertiary education, compared with secondary education and different genders, which draws its evidence from various time periods and countries. My thesis statement is that high school graduates should pursue tertiary education, in order to gain more socioeconomic gains after graduation in comparison to their peers.
My first goal is to introduce the concrete contents of educational returns to readers. I chose papers from a range of academic journals and well-established magazines to identify what the social and economic returns of education are. The second point is to provide readers with a series of comparisons, in terms of levels of education and gender. For this point, I referred to books, magazines, PhD dissertations, and more journals for support. These materials help develop the reasoning that tertiary education can bring more in terms returns to students than that of secondary or even lower education. This is generally applicable to both boys and girls. The third point exists to further prove that the above finding is universal in terms of time periods and different countries. Articles in authoritative periodicals such as Oxford Review of Education and books published by well-known publishers such as Macmillan Publisher help to develop this point with researches covering different time periods and countries like the United States, Israel, and China.
All of these reading materials will contribute to my conclusion that high school students should continue to further their studies in universities to foster personal well being.

Bartolj et al holds that even during the transition from a socialist to a market economy Slovenia still witnesses the demand for university graduates dominating the period between 1994 and 2008, despite the fact that high school graduates are becoming more and more significant in the twenty-first century. This article is published in 2013, so the information is current. Also, Post-Communist Economies is an academic journal with more than ten years publication experience. The finding in this article is useful because it provides strong evidence on the benefits of tertiary education in terms of cross-time and cross-country comparisons.

The research result from this paper is useful since it proves that the positive effect of returns to tertiary education is also significant in developed countries of the UK, which will be used in my essay for cross-country comparison.

Tally Katz-Gerro and Meir Yaish finds that this is a rather complex picture, highlighting the importance of the distribution of gender along occupations and the negative consequences of the gender segregation in the labor market for both genders. I would use the information in this article to show the disadvantages of women in some sectors of labor market, as well as the gradual improvement for females' returns to tertiary education.

This article is useful in its introduction about the returns to education which will be used in the first part of my essay.

Both of the authors are professors from University of Arizona and famous in the educational and economic fields. Macmillan Publishers is among the first-class publishers around the world. I would use the findings of this book to show that returns on tertiary education have great positive effects on economies of developed countries such as the US.

Moreover, World Development is a multi-discilplinary academic journal covering development studies, with a history of more than forty years. This reading is useful in my paper because it informs people about the most general evidence of returns to education at a global scale, which I will use for not only the general introduction but also in the comparison of genders in terms of returns to investment in education.

This anthology focuses on girl's education in the context of the twenty-first century. In chapter 4, the author Patrinos has discussed the returns from education from the gender perspective. He holds the view that while the returns from schooling are generally high, especially in developing countries, lower education especially the primary education has much lower return. Harry Anthony Patrinos is the Lead Education Economist at the World Bank, specializing in all areas of education. His findings in this article are useful because it provides evidence on the higher returns from tertiary education than that of secondary and primary education.

This PhD dissertation is current, presented to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2009. The author now has worked as a lecturer in Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong, China. I would use this article to show that tertiary education can provide students with more earnings after their graduation compared with that of secondary education and that girls can also benefit from earning returns mentioned above.
