Part 1
The article by Bonilla-Silva and Embrick (2007) examining the residential and social segregation of the whites from the blacks that creates a “white habitus” and various examples in this article can be used to justify for the whites’ residential and social segregation, three of which will be elaborated on in the below. The first example is that the whites tend not to develop any meaningful relationships with blacks and other minorities either psychologically or spatially. The more detailed condition is that the whites choose not to engage themselves in any social activity or developing a romantic relationship with the blacks. That is to say, the close friendship or marriage between the whites and the blacks are highly prevented in the reality. And then the second example that will be illustrated is that the whites and the blacks have developed segregated lifestyles when compared with one another. The whites appear to mind when they find that the blacks have the same income and education as them because they deem that the blacks are inferior to them. That is to say, the whites hold that they should have higher income and better education when compared with the blacks. Thirdly, the whites’ being less committed to an interracial life can as well be used to account for the whites’ residential and social segregation. The whites seldom communicate with the blacks in their daily life when they are asked how they deal with their own behavior and they seldom invite the blacks for lunch or dinner. They would rather communicate with other whites and contact them more in their daily life.
As for how whites interpret their own self-segregation, the finding is that the whites do not regard their segregation from the blacks as a problem at all because they they do not hold it is a racial phenomenon. The expression in the article that “It’s just the way things were” (Bonilla-Silva and Embrick, 2007, p.330) can be used to better explain how whites interpret their own self-segregation. Also, it is right because the fact that the whites do not have realized their own self-segregation as a problem so that this phenomenon cannot be solved in the end.
As a matter of fact, white habitus is a racialized uninterpreted socialization process that conditions and creates whites’ racial tastes, perceptions, feelings, emotions, and views on social matters. As a result, the white habitus results in a sense of group belonging and negative views about non-whites (Bonilla-Silva and Embrick, 2007, p.325). According to this, it is obvious that white habitus prevents all kinds of movement towards rectifying systemic racism. When it comes to the question as for how white habitus prevents any movement towards rectifying systemic racism, the first example can be given is that the whites have different racial attitudes, cognitions, expressions and senses of aesthetics toward interracial marriage when compared with the blacks. It can be understood in this way that the whites would like to marry with other whites instead of the blacks or other minorities. In the mind of the whites, the marriage systems cannot be changed even though they claim that they are color-blindness and a color-blind view on love. At the same time, the second example is that the whites are lack of reflexivity about how race fractures their own lives and such kind of reflexivity can be embodied on a series of issues. The fact is that the whites deem that they have a different system in their behaviors from the blacks and they would like that their behavior systems not be influenced or changed by the blacks in any way because of their negative views toward the blacks.
Part 2
In the article by Ta-Nehisi Coates, various examples have been listed to argue against the reparations for African Americans. Or maybe it can be put in another way that if the US made up the decision to rectify systemic racism, a compelling counter argument would help mitigate the historical legacy of slavery, Jim Crowism, mass incarceration, etc. To put it more specifically, the first example against the reparations for African Americans is that slavery is the foundation for American prosperity (Coates, 2014, p.5). It can be understood in this way that it is this deep wound that enables the Americans to take arms to fight for the better development of the country. Secondly, discrimination, racist housing policies as well as segregation caused by the reparations for African Americans as well account for a part as for why the US can be that prosperous today. Discrimination, racist housing policies as well as segregation all play a role in making the Americans stronger so that they can be more powerful in building its country. Thirdly, the moral debt of the Americans make it hard to live up to the expectations of the black Americans so that those black Americans have no choice but to fight for their own ideals through personal efforts, otherwise the blacks may have no motivation to fight.
However, I would like to propose three examples that support the reparations for African Americans. Firstly, the reparations for African Americans is conducive for racial democracy and the whole nation can develop to be a democratic one in the end. After all, a democratic society is the developmental trend for the society in approaching days. In this way, people from all races can make their own bit to the development of the nation, contributing to the better development of the nation at last. Secondly, the reparations for African Americans can help change the life of the blacks at present and those generations and generations to come. In this way, the blacks can have the courage to fight for their own rights and interests so that they won’t be repressed or treated unequally anymore. In the long term, it is good for the change of the destiny of the blacks in one way or another. Thirdly, the reparations for African Americans can help the America win the support from people from other countries in the globe because other countries can see its integrity in receiving the blacks. As a result, they may choose to immigrate to the US as well so as to further contribute to the development of this country at last.
Part 3
If I was asked by Father Groppi to describe the state of America radically, what I would like to tell him is that America has really progressed a lot over years. The most apparent is that freedom, harmony, justice, love and peace prevail in this country and everyone tends to love one another with hearts no matter what others’ races are. And the Negroes tend not to be influenced by the racial discrimination as in the past and they have their own constitutional rights without no marches because they are protected by the legislation and human force. At the same time, the blacks have power to get whatever they desire and they can live an equal life as the whites and they can get their supposed rights all the time.
