Monster Trucks, Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies and Disruption Entertainment for Paramount Pictures, 2017

Logline: Tripp Coley is a High School senior who is unsatisfied with his life. He encounters in his truck an escaped monster that can control trucks. He soon makes friends with the monster and names it Creech. With the help from Tripp and his friend Meredith, Creech saves its parents and other creatures that are captured by Terravex Oil.

Creative Personnel:

Dir: Chris Wedge (Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade, Ice Age: Collision Course, Ferdinand)

Scr: Derek Connolly

Stars: Lucas Till (Hannah Montana: The Movie, X-Men: First Class), Jane Levy, Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, Love, Love, Love), Rob Lowe (The West Wing, The Grinder), Danny Glover

Producer: Mary Parent, Denis L. Stewart

Financing:

Budget:                     $125 million

P&A:                          $60 million (by rule of thumb)

COST:                        $185 million

US BO                        $33.4 million

WORD BO                 $31.1 million

Box Office:                $64.5 million

REVENUE:                 $ 61.9 million (by rule of thumb)

THEATRICAL LOSS:    $123.1 million

Origins: The movie project was launched in 2013 by Adam Goodman when he was the president of Paramount Pictures film group. In 2012, the departure of Jeffrey Katzenberg’s DreamWorks Animation, which was the main supplier of family franchises, was a big loss to this computer animated movie. The movie was originally set to release in May, 2015 but was delayed and missed several release dates after Adam Goodman, who had a history of wasting money on wrong projects, was dismissed from his position.

Organizational Consequences:

Individual: Chris Wedge cannot take all the responsibility for the failure of Monster Trucks because the idea of monster living in a truck was originated from Adam Goodman’s four-year-old son. Chris Wedge was hired and put on board by Adam Goodman.

Franchise: Monster Trucks was expected to be an entry movie of a new live-action/animated franchise at the beginning. There will be no sequels after it was regarded one of the most failing movies of the year and a big budget loser.

Studio: Paramount’s parent company Viacom announced a loss of US$115 million that is related to the box office performance of Monster Trucks which was yet to be released, which had negative impact on the movie. The failure of Monster Trucks was a heavy blow to the studio’s ambition to make achievements in computer animation. However, Paramount is still determined to develop their animation business and create a pipeline of animated pictures, but will focus on conventional animated movies rather than live-action/animated movies like Monster Trucks.

Ratings: Metacritic: 41; Rotten Tomato Top Critics: 30%;  CinemaScore: A

Representative Quotes:

“Like it sounds, Monster Trucks is a lame kids’ movie reverse-engineered from a worse pun.” – Peter Debruge from Variety

“It’s an eco-fable devoid of didactic overkill, delivered with energy, winking mischief, unobtrusive effects and a skilled cast.” – Andy Webster from The New York

“Monster Trucks is a wreck, fueled by the crazy belief that noise and repetition can disguise the lack of credible writing, directing, acting and FX.” – Peter Travers from Rolling Stone
