In 1970, the independent status of American Indians was completely changed. Indians became the object of control of the United States federal government. The US federal government adopted a policy of compulsory assimilation, forced the Indians to accept the concept of private ownership, white culture and Christian religion, in order to eliminate Indians’ traditional culture and ethnic consciousness (Crow Dog & Erdoes, 1990). This is racism in nature as it established white supremacy and Indian inferiority in the society. An important measure of forced assimilation was the boarding schools for Indians, forcing them to accept white education, destroying Indians’ own language and culture, and “upgrading” Indians from “barbarians” to “civilized people”. The agenda behind was to absorb the Indian populations into the white dominated society, make them U.S. citizens thorough assimilation, and thus occupy land that originally belonged to Indians.

 

There was no sense of civilization in the acts of robbing the land, treating Indians like the conquered, and violating their peace treaties. After many boarding schools were set up inside and outside the reserve, Indian students were forcibly taken away from their homes (Distinct Groups, 2018). Most of the time, they were kept in school. They were completely isolated from the tribes and their parents. They took militarized management in boarding schools and was exposed to English-only teaching (Crow Dog & Erdoes, 1990). Students in boarding schools could only use English and had to give up the original Indian language. Contrary to the expectations of the authority, boarding schools kept Indian children away from their parents and their familiar tribal environment, leading to depression, malnutrition, and even diseases. The children became physically and mentally devastated.

 

The federal government's compulsory assimilation policy was a distinctive form of racism against the Indians. It was to culturally destroy the Indian identity. This kind of education policy did not take into account the actual human feelings of the Indians. It imposed on them the culturally dominant educational content of the white. It completely ignored the Indians’ identity and cultural traditions. Its purpose was still to replace the Indian tradition with a white cultural system. The compulsory assimilation education policy has exacerbated the distrust and hatred of the Indians towards the federal government, and it will inevitably bring about the Indians' resentment and rejection of the white people (Crow Dog & Erdoes, 1990). This has also seriously hindered the integration of the Indians into the mainstream society. Overall, the policy proved not only to be a complete failure, but a violation of basic human rights due to racism.

 

Restoration of the Indian identity can be a difficult task, since the diversity of the Indian culture is beyond measure (Distinct Groups, 2018). In order to help the Indian population, people must dig deeper to the common root of the Indian culture and integrate into the education system for both Indians and non-Indians. This requires the Indians to rewrite their history and actively explore the return to the root of their culture. Through the cooperation between the government and the Indian communities in education, Indian traditional culture can gain the attention of the entire society and be presented to the world in a more systematic way. Through continuous efforts to restore traditional Indian culture and philosophy, the Indian population can both survive and thrive based on one common identity. While searching for the cultural roots, the Indians also need education to use scientific means to protect their legal rights. Not only must they adapt to the white-dominated society, they must also seek scientific methods to develop their new chapter of American Indians history.
