Basically, lodging industry means business that provides overnight accommodation. In detail, lodging industry can be divided into many different segments according to the length of staying, price, service and the space of the property. Meanwhile, lodging industry has strong connection with many other industries such as restaurant industry, traveling industry, retailer industry and many other recreational industries.

In today’s world, lodging industry plays a more and more important role in our daily life. Seeing fancy hotels with luxury design, delicate cuisine, considerate service, I have been long dreaming to find a job within lodging industry to see how the famous luxury hotels brands such as IHG, Peninsula Hotels, Jumirah provides satisfy their customers in different countries. After this course, I am more attracted by the lodging industry. Thanks to the course, I have learned a lot of detailed lodging industry knowledge and the course pushes me to appreciate the business comprehensively instead of merely being attracted by the fancy outlook of several luxury hotels. I understand that running a hotel is a complex job as the management team needs to take many things into consideration such as staffing, service, food, front center, sales and marketing and etc.

The chapter Structure of Lodging teaches me that the hotel owners have two assets, real estate and the operating business and that different scale of business has different management structure. Meanwhile, the hotel franchisors’ properties don't belong to the company and they are only able to use the brand name. The knowledge in the chapter associate me with many famous hotels worldwide. While impressed by the service provided by many famous hotels, I first thought deeply about the good-quality service because of this course. While service is a frequently-mentioned word, I learn the real meaning of service as satisfying customers’ needs and wants with respect and dignity in time. The definition pushes me to recall the hotels that I have chosen and the service they provided. Meanwhile, the idea of Quality Service System also greatly deepens my thought about hotel service. As a determinant factor for customer retention rate, service plays a vital role in lodging industry. While facilities can be standardized, the service quality of staff is hard to measure. As a result, it is important for the management team to come out with an elaborate plan to train its service staff and motivate them to keep providing good service to customers. Meanwhile, it is also important for them to teach the service team to be patient even when getting complaint from customers. After identifying what service really is, chapter 4 teaches me the role of lodging managers. Chapter 5 Staffing the Lodging Operation really shows me the complex profile of the hotel staff and the importance of a powerful and efficient management team to organize the big team into routine work to maintain and improve the business performance of the hotel. The leadership part and the role of supervisors greatly open my mind to consider the way to motivate a team to work functionally. While being a customer of hotels, I have hardly think about the important impact of the front office. The course makes me realize that the front office actually is essential to forecast the demand and market the hotels. Chapter 7 The Sales and Marketing Department demonstrates varied methods to promote a hotel’s business and different targets of promotion. For instance, some promotion targets at corporation market. In addition, there are many different channels to market and sell hotels’ service such as websites, travel agencies and etc. The Housekeeping Department explains the detailed responsibilities of the department. The one of the most interesting chapter for me is Food and Beverage Operations. For many famous hotels, food and beverage is a very important trait for them to attract and appeal to customers. Sometimes, customers come to the hotels not for accommodation but for the famous cuisine provided. Therefore, the management team should come out a design to offer a broad diversity of food and beverage to meet different customers’ appetite in case of customers unsatisfactory. Meanwhile, for hotels which provide limited service, the supply of food and beverage can be an extra cost for running the hotel. Therefore, it is important for the management team to precisely forecast customers’ preference in food, the amount of food that the customers will consume as a way to save cost.

After realizing the complexity and great challenge of running a hotel, I believe that to work within the lodging industry, one should show strong empathy, be detail-oriented, reliable and good at team work. First, since the success of a hotel greatly rely on the customer’s perception of the service quality, the lodging industry staff should have great empathy to understand the customers’ need as sometimes they may be unable to realize their actual need. Being detail-oriented is important because the staff should always pay attention to every detail that can satisfy its customers. Being reliable is vital since one worker’s negligence may cast great threat to the reputation of the hotel brand. Thus, one should be reliable to fulfill each task perfectly. Finally, good team work skill is required since the success of the business is actually the success of the whole staffing team which is combined with different departments. Although sometimes there are people of different job responsibilities, their working results are actually correlated. For instance, if the housekeeping department fails to clean the room in time, the front desk may get complaint from customers. Only when different departments collaborate well can the hotel have a good performance.

As a student, to keep developing my skills for my future employment, I will not only acquire knowledge through books, but also try to find internship opportunity in famous hotels, and observe the operation of hotels thorough experience. I believe the combination of academic knowledge and practical experience can make me a competitive candidate when finding a job in the lodging industry.
