In Lives of the Saints, the novel of Nino Ricci, Cristina is coldly and cruelly treated by her husband and she is also the most controversial character in this novel. For one part, she embraces herself as an active feminist who rejects the expected role of a woman in the society and she would like not to live as a traditional woman. But for another, she appears to be unable to fight against the patriarchal society. Therefore the following would like to provide a feminist criticism of Cristina, which will be justified from two aspects: carrying out feminist practices while being unable to free herself from her husband’s bully and disbelieving in religion and superstitions while isolating herself from the rest of the village.

Firstly, Cristina implements her own feminist practices of being independent and being her own person but she still cannot get herself rid of the bully from her husband. It cannot be denied that Cristina is really an independent women because when she was offered the money by Alfredo that her husband gave her, she did not receive it but instead she said that “You think it’s the money I want, don’t you? Here, take it back to him, stronzo, tell him I don’t need his money” (Ricci 97). Based on this, it is not hard to detect that Cristina lives on herself but not rely on anyone else. At the same time, Cristina’s being able to raise Vittorio on her own when her husband left for America can also be used for account for her independence. Cristina is an independent woman that does not need a man. Also, she chooses to wear tight fitting clothing to show off her pregnancy can be seen as another form of her fighting against the society and it is narrated that “My mother appeared dressed not in one of her loose dresses but in a white blouse and a black skirt which fit tight around her waist, the swell there rising up like a hill” (Ricci 142). According to this, we can say that Cristina really has the courage to rebel against the society and she behaves not following the social rules. But what is a pity to say is that Critina is unable to protect herself from physical injury by her husband. Just as the narrator recalls that “I saw my father pick up something from the table... my mother bore a tiny scar” (Ricci 32). However, Cristina simply “recoil and her lips forming into scream or soundless horror as the object shattered against her cheek” (Ricci 32) when she is confronted with the bully from her husband. Based on this, it can be readily detected that Cristina suffers from physical damage and she is under the control of her husband.

Furthermore, her disbelief in religion and superstitions finally separates herself from others in the village. From the perspective of Cristina, she does not hold that superstitions are rational. When Giuseppina suggested her to complete the chicken ritual, she just refuses and responds that “Giuseppi, you’re not serious! A good god-fearing women like you talking to me about thsaese stipidagini! I thought you had more sense than that” (Ricci 154). She is against the views of others because others believe in the irrational superstitions, resulting in worse gossips toward her. Apart from that, she tends to express directly whatever is on her mind without taking any regard of whether it is suitable or not. She does not believe that she will be cursed and she denies Luciano’s opinion by responding that “Don’t be foolish. The snake was a stupid accident” (Ricci 65). She simply exhibits her own beliefs. Even though she is in a patriarchy community, she still has a feminist mindset, which can be obtained from her words that “You are the ones who are dead, not me, because not one of you knows what it means to be free and to make a choice” (Ricci 190). In this sense, it is not hard to find that Cristina is a success in her shaped feminist mindset, but it is a must for her to consider her relationship with other females around her so that she can be better accepted.
