Critical thinking habits are the major feature of a critical mind. The human brain is highly dependent on past experiences in making judgements and creating convenient “short-cuts” in the mind that avoid laborious thinking processes. However, being a critical thinker demands a higher level of self-control that helps avoid the typical short-cuts of the mind. In the article “Take this fish and look at it”, the author Samuel H. Scudder describes a valuable lesson of critical thinking and self-control by his ichthyology professor Louis Agassiz. The story tells the readers about the importance of avoiding stereotype, to observe instead of glancing, and to ask questions instead of taking things for granted.

It is important for a critical thinker to avoid stereotypes and remain objective and nonjudgmental. When the protagonist began his initial observation, he was holding several prejudices against ichthyology. Personally, his found his major interest in studying insects. This preference influenced his attitude in observing the haemulon. Deep down, the protagonist also had the false impression that “entomology was a cleaner science than ichthyology”. However, as he began turning the specimen, looking at it from different perspectives, pushing down its throat, and eventually drawing the specimen with a pencil, things changed. As soon as he switched from the passive glancing into the active observing mode, he was discovering new things about the specimen immediately.

While the active observation brought new discoveries, the protagonist was still not asking critical questions and taking the discoveries for granted. This is why the professor was disappointed about his failure to note the most significant feature of the specimen. The professor asked the protagonist to look at the specimen again and again with the hope that he might change his mode of thinking. After spending the “wakeful hours” processing the observation results, the protagonist finally found that the specimen had “symmetrical sides with paired organs”, which is a significant discovery that could lead to meaningful research.

Overall, the story tells the readers about the three important aspects of a critical thinker: attitude, observation, and questioning. Attitude is about refraining from stereotypes and remaining humble about the unfamiliar. Observation is about being actively engaged in learning more about the subject and generate meaning from the observation, instead of passively looking. While attitude and observation lay the foundation of critical thinking, asking meaningful questions is the key to successful critical thinking. The most important quality of a critical thinker is the self-control over the impulses of stereotypes, glancing, and taking things for granted without questioning.
