Contribution of Alice Paul

Alice Paul was born in January 11, 1885 in Moorestown, New Jersey and died on July 9th, 1977. She was one of the most prominent social activists and lawyers in America. During the whole life of Alice, she believed that she was heading to the right direction to fight for the equal rights. Although Alice has also revealed that there are many complicated problems in most of the reforms. The pure and ordinary equality is also important in everyone’s life pursuit. During her life, Alice led the fight for an Equal Rights Amendment via aggressive protest strategies, which also helped her manage to reach the agreement of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920 granting voting rights to women. She was also dedicated to the Equal Rights Amendment till 1970s, which finally exerted great influences on the subsequent governmental policies; she also became a model for other women in the world. The following part will have a detailed analysis of the contribution to the US and the significance of her accomplishments.

Personal achievements & changes to the U.S.

Alice Paul earned the master’s degree in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania and she began to learn more about the women’s inferior position in the society and how more efforts can be made to raise the legal status and then she furthered her studies in Washington College of Law and another Ph.D in American University. During her academic life, Paul gradually shifted from social work to law, during which she gradually gained greater political sensibilities. After experiences in several suffrage activities, she made the determination to change the legal status of women and she also found another partner, Lucy Burns to begin a new campaign for a constitutional amendment which can actually enfranchise women all around the nation. In addition to the suffrage parade, Paul and Burns were in face of the resistance from NAWSA, which refused her idea of amendment in the whole process.

However, Paul and Burns continued their efforts and the call for suffrage rights have also been shifted to the national level by using more militant tactics. By 1919, their countless efforts have received good results and the amendment had finally passed both houses. Paul and Burns continued to lobby and by 1920 the amendment had finally been ratified and even the NWP agreed to consider the political goals and ideas of Paul and Burns one more time. Subsequently, Paul’s notion of “men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States” on the one hand become controversial and also invite more confirmation and support on the other side, which also means the temporary of Alice and Burns. Afterwards, Paul continued in the aspect of women’s equal rights through the middle of the 20th century. Even in the process of WWII and after the war, Paul also lobbied the Congress to include the sex discrimination to the equal protections of Civil Rights bill and striving for equal rights for women in the aspect of employment in 1964.

Contribution & significance of Paul to the U.S.

In this whole process, Paul has made contribution to the U.S.. During her process of striving for the legal rights of women, she was isolated and prevented from communicating with others and other organizations; however, she continued her efforts for the women’s rights. Paul created great political pressure and it had a decisive impact on the development of the states for ratification. After Alice Paul achieved the right to vote, she continued to make more efforts for the rights of women and she earned other three law degrees and she organized the Woman’s Research Foundation from 1927 to 1937. Therefore to sum up, the Alice Paul made efforts all her life to win support for the 1920 constitutional amendment, which finally enable American females have the rights to vote nationwide. By launching an eighteen-month-long protest for the sidewalk outside of the White House, she raised the tension and intensity of the movement of voting rights. After overcoming various kinds of resistance power, Alice Paul devoted all her life to equal rights between females and males. Until her eighties, she had been active in upholding and protecting the rights of female in the political and other areas. In summarizing the life of Alice Paul, she suffered a lot especially during the years in prison with dire conditions and attacks during many activities. She kept fight for the equal treatment of females. Her achievements and efforts not only improve the female’s status in the political and other aspects in the U.S. but also give more insightful ideas and inspirations for all the females to fight for their own rights; she also became one of the most important female spiritual leaders in the 20th century.
