The Fusion of Artist and His Work: Vincent Van Gogh and His Sunflowers

There is no doubt that Vincent van Gogh is a shining super star if people view the western art history as a vast galaxy. He was passionate in art, and he had distinct and strong painting style. He kept painting until the last period of his life. However, his work did not attract people’s attention during his whole life, and he always lived a poor life relying on the support of his brother. The situation was changed after the death of Vincent. In 1990, van Gogh set another world record for selling an art work by auction during the centenary of his death (Arnold, 13). As one of the most expensive paintings all over the world, Sunflowers was van Gogh’s impromptu work, created in the sunny south of France. From the bright but depressed sunflowers, audience could find the image of van Gogh, which reflects that great art is the fusion of work and the artist himself.

Van Gogh’s sunflowers are sunny and brilliant, showing van Gogh’s enthusiasm in painting and life. No one had so strong enthusiasm in sunflowers before van Gogh, and no one would like to spend several years in describing the same plant from its various forms and perspectives. Van Gogh’s Sunflowers seems to present the brightness and heat provided by van Gogh rather than flowers themselves. His oil painting techniques, dense but bright color, and forceful brushwork make them become true flowers of sun. The reason why van Gogh loved painting sunflowers so much tend to be closely associated with the connotation of sunflowers. Sunflowers seek the brightness and the sun. People view sunflowers as the symbol of light and hope. As a consequence, painting sunflowers is painting sun and van Gogh himself. The sun, sunflowers and van Gogh fuse together (Michaud, 25). Sunflowers is the true portrayal of van Gogh’s inner enthusiasm, and it reflects van Gogh’s and choice of life. In addition, van Gogh only used bright yellow color to paint the work, which could be understood as the embodiment of spiritual van Gogh. Influenced by impressionist painters in Paris and the art of Japanese uliyo-e, van Gogh widened his eyes and the color of his work became much brighter. Yellow is a kind of color which is passionate and easy to express emotions. For van Gogh who had intense emotions, yellow has special meanings (Gruener, 370). Yellow stands for sun and love, showing van Gogh’s desire for hope and love. What is more, the time when he focused on creating a group of sunflowers was the mature period of his art. During the period, his work received encouragement by a significant cadre of colleagues (Arnold, 13), therefore, he put a jerk in painting in order to gain more attentions. In general, the sunny and brilliant sunflowers reflect van Gogh’s enthusiasm in painting and life.

On the other hand, van Gogh’s sunflowers are depressed and sad in the meantime, showing van Gogh’s feelings of life experience. From the painting, people could see coarse tablecloth, simple vase made in terrine and interlaced sunshine. It is the season of sunflowers, nevertheless, certain flowers have already withered away. It shows that sunflowers cannot get rid of the destiny of senility and death even though they reach the sunshine. Sunflowers have a short flower season which only lasts for several months in the summer. Van Gogh is just like the flowers, and he hastily ended his own short and lonely life. He always tried to use bright and sparkling color to retain the great beauty of sunflowers, but time and tide wait for no man, let alone the weak life of plant. As a painter, van Gogh’s lifestyle and pursuit of art was different from other people (Ives et al., 4). He was lonely, and it was rarely for him to receive identification and appreciation during his whole life. People around him laughed at him and treated him as mental patient. He was lonely and painful. He longed for family affection, but only his brother ever understood him. He cherished friendship, but Gauguin finally left him. All these experiences made van Gogh feel that death was the most thorough loneliness, as well as the most thorough freedom he could seek. In addition, the God created a remarkable talent without peer in his generation, but did not create audiences who appreciate his talent. In this way, van Gogh had very few audiences who recognized his abilities and talents. During the whole life, van Gogh was always misunderstood, ignored and forgotten. It shows that even though van Gogh lived in the sunshine, he still could not get rid of the destiny of depression and early death.

From Sunflowers, audience could read van Gogh’s words and feel his strong feelings. For van Gogh, painting is the way to express emotion and communicate with the world. He expresses himself and presents his enthusiastic inner world. It also makes the painting become vivid and tends to give the life to the work. From the painting, people could find that it is the fusion of van Gogh and sunflowers. It not only has the brightness of sunflowers, but also has the sadness and depression of van Gogh. Generally, van Gogh uses his life to finish the work.
