Employer’s Expectation In the Workplace, discuss about interpersonal skills that you’re most confident in and which you would like to improve, include some steps you will take to improve them.

As newcomers move their life from the eastern culture environment to western, normally it is hard for them to adapt to a new environment because first, they might not familiar with their workplace culture and second, they might no familiar with the employment laws. Therefore, understanding the workplace culture and your own interpersonal skills before you start working in a new and different cultural background is important because it can help you to prepare yourself and knowing what is your own strength when you interacting with people that you are not familiar with. In the following paragraphs will discuss six different topics that are associated with Canadian workplace culture and how the Canadian employer’s expectation of their employee’s interaction with others. The focus of this essay is to help the audience to understand what are the differences of Canadian workplace culture and what are the expectation of the employers so those who are looking forward to work in a different country can better prepare themselves.

According to LaRoche, there are several interpersonal skills that the newcomers find most challenging when they work at the Canadian workplace First is the communication skills which is the skill that I found I’m only fifty percent good at it. I could write papers, reports without hesitation, however, when it comes to verbal communication, I have difficulty when native speakers use idioms or slangs within our conversation. Moreover, if the native speakers use referencing phrase or jokes, normally I have hard time to catch the meaning behind it. In order to catch up with others, I listen more while I’m talking to others and I would observe and listen to others conversation as well even I’m not involving in one. By listening and observing how native speakers talk, it helps me to understand and learn about their culture and improve my own skills when I talk to them.

Canadian workplace considered less competence than other culture because its workplace structure is flat, which means that the employers expect the same thing to each individual. Basically, in the Canadian workplace, the focus on team work rather than individual work, for instance, during a meeting, the facilitator would prefer and expect individuals to distribute as a team that work together towards the same goal. In order to fit in the culture, we have to learn and recognize that a team is made up with diverse individuals whom carry various responsibilities but has to work together towards the goal that the company set for us. In addition to fairness, Canadian employers also expect that the employee to perform required professional skills at their jobs. For instance, if I have put “able to excel office software skill”, my employer will expect me to be able to use Word, Excel or PowerPoint very well on making reports or analysis without other people’s help. No matter what experiences, lesson or skills that you have learned in school or previous job, your employer will expect to see you using it in the new workplace. This is the other perspective of Canadian employers’ competence that the proficient technique and knowledge needs to be performed within the organization.

In Canadian workplace, the perceptions of time is immensely valued and they expect others value it as important as they do. No matter if you’re attending for class, meeting, work or any other scheduled events, Canadians expect attendees to be arriving on time or minutes early. Unlike other culture, punctuality and attendance have been taken into consideration of employees’ job performance of every Canadian company. Personally, I value the time management as important as the Canadians; I prefer to arrive five to ten minutes early for every event that I have assigned to attend. If I acknowledge that there will be some attendees tend to arrive late, I would have notified them that the event would begin at a earlier time than its scheduled time. So that everyone will present on time.

Different than other cultures workplace, Canadian employers expect  and highly recommend their employee to take initiative of their work and make decision on their own rather than asking their superior. Despite the unfamiliar feelings towards a new environment and culture, the employer is expecting newcomers to take initiative by asking questions and offer openly discussion with others. I believe this is a good practice because without actually involving in the discussion, it is hard to get to know and understand it. Therefore, I would suggest all the newcomers to take the initiative and ask any question in regards to their culture, behavior and so forth.

Same as other culture, respect others has been the top priority in the Canadian workplace especially between genders. Within the Canadian workplace, women tend to be in the high-level management position than most of the men. However, women is treated equally by men because women is recognized the symbol of comforting and climate. In addition to gender, Canadian value politeness and fairness as well as personal privacy in their workplace are equally important as anything else. For instance, Canadians mostly allow an arm’s length distance between people while talking with others and then tend to feel uncomfortable if their surrounding environment become aggressive. Canadians value politeness and own personal space among other things.

Canada and United States are both a land that not only full of possibilities but also content many different cultures. All people are welcomed and allowed to continue their cultural practice and customs on the basis of not violating others’ rights or security. Cross-cultural communication could be a challenging and tough to teach because inappropriate words or phrases might lead to racism or discrimination to others. I personally will never use words or phrase that would associate with race, colors, religious, gender and even nationality because I believe it is also part of a person’s moral, ethic and respect when interacting with others.

To sum up, working in a culture that is different than your own is hard and challenging. In order to help yourself and others to adapt to the changes, what we can do is to understand what are the differences between the two cultures, the core value of their people, what can do and what cannot do and so forth. There are so many practices that we can do on daily basis such as respect and punctuality because these two categories are not only immensely valued in Canada but every place else in the world. Learning how to respect others is the first thing that our parents have taught us, without doing so, people would not value and treat you in return. Last but not least, I believe my own interpersonal skills will benefit me when working in a different culture environment because I might not understand every culture but I respect the differences between us, I take initiative by asking questions when I don’t know things and most importantly, I could easily adapt and embrace changes of the environment that I am going to encounter with.
