The painting piece titled Sailboats on the Seine at Petit-Gennevilliers was created by French artist Claude Monet in 1874, and the piece called Eiffel Tower was created by French artist Georges Seurat on a wood board in 1889. There are some similarities and differences between these two pieces which represented Impressionism and Neo-impressionism respectively. From perspectives as a viewer, the major similarity between these two pieces is the strong expression of light and color. Nevertheless, comparing to the piece by Monet, Seurat’s painting reveals more personal feelings from the artist by using creative painting techniques.

Monet’s piece was displayed on canvas by oil. The main objects the piece shows are several sailboats besides the shore. There are different types of sailboats in different sizes and colors. Besides the sailboats, there are views of several objects on the bank. Several buildings surrounded by grass and trees can be seen on the left part of the piece. There are also some factories with working chimneys on the horizon. Besides these objects, the piece reveals the beautiful sky and water that bring people a sense of peace. The shadows of the sailboats are clearly expressed in the painting. Furthermore, the sky with clouds in different colors makes the piece more vivid. From a broad view, Monet created a piece with a sense of depth by using a variety of colors, and of course, by using his brilliant painting techniques. The piece of Monet is flat instead of three-dimensional since the piece is just like a picture capturing the view of boats, buildings, sky, and water. Without any doubt, Monet tried to show something that we can easily recognize by having a look at it. The objects on the piece are described realistically. Even though the painter did not pay a lot of effort on the creation of details, viewers can easily recognize what the objects refer to on the canvas. The use and arrangement of colors are the bright spots of the piece. Monet used a series of combinations of bright colors to create a picture in spring or summer time. Technically speaking, the way of expressing light and color Monet used is perfect for a topic related to spring and vitality. However, the piece also brings me a sense of tranquility that I can only feel in the country.

Comparing to Monet’s piece, the oil painting created by Seurat on a wood board does not involve many objects. From the center is the main object of the piece, the Eiffel Tower. Below the Eiffel Tower is the bridge connecting the city of Paris. I am not sure what is on the left side of the piece. From my point of view, there are leaves from a tree. On the right bottom of the piece, I can see a white object which I cannot recognize what it is. The structure of the bridge below the Tower is clearly expressed on the piece, and Seurat used different layers of colors to express it. I cannot know much information about the piece by simply watching it. For instance, it is impossible to know if the piece is expressing the view of the Tower in spring or autumn. Moreover, the Eiffel Tower is not in yellow or orange. However, the color of the Eiffel Tower and the leaves on the piece is the same. Seurat used a unique way to finish the painting, the details of objects on the piece can not be found. For example, the layers of the sky are not obvious, and all the objects can hardly be recognized except the Eiffel Tower. Thus, comparing to Monet’s piece, Seurat’s painting is more abstract. The piece is flat since it is also like a photo of a view, though like a photo taken by a broken camera. Seurat used a different technique to finish this painting and he made a lot of arrangements on different colors by making “dots” on the piece.

To discuss the difference between these two pieces, we need to know the different techniques Monet and Seurat used to create pieces. Georges Seurat was the inventor of “Pointillism”, which refers to the application of separated spots or dots of pre-color, side by side on the canvas (“Pointillism”). As the leader of the Neo-impressionist movement, Seurat used “pointillism” to create a new way of arranging and expressing colors and lights. As the leader of the impressionist movement in France, Monet explored the constantly changing quality of light and color in different atmospheric conditions and at various times of the day (“Monet”). Even though the Monet did not spend too much effort on the details of objects like other classical masters of painting, the colors and lights in his pieces are so attractive. To be different from Monet’s techniques, “pointillism” is a way to express things abstractly. From my perspective, the biggest difference between two pieces and between Impressionism and Neo-impressionism is what artists wanted to show by creating their pieces. For Monet and Impressionism, the value of a piece comes from how it shows the lights and colors of the natural world to its viewers. In contrast, Neo-impressionist artists like Seurat believed that expressing what they were thinking about the view or objects which were on the piece was the most important. To conclude, Neo-impressionism focused more on expressing artists’ feelings on objects while Impressionism tried to express the beauty of colors and lights of nature.
