Segregation is considered a landmark of the civil rights movement in the United States

Segregation in schools has always been considered an important milestone in the American civil rights movement. However, the scope of Megan Ming Francis's book exploration is no longer segregation, but the establishment of the National Association for the Promotion of Colored People (NAACP). In the early anti-lynching movement, it was NAACP that contributed to the success and expanded the movement's influence to a larger scope. Starting from the first chapter, we discussed how these small foundations promoted the general trend of the civil rights movement.

Although the importance of eliminating apartheid in schools should not diminish, the establishment of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is at least as important. For centuries, lynching has been the most terrifying ethnic terrorism in American history. The racist soil against blacks gave birth to this unique crime, which is deeply rooted in the thinking of certain white Americans. Despite its small scale, the severity of lynching is comparable to that of the Holocaust. The victims of the lynching were mostly black men who were accused of sexually abusing white women. Since its establishment, NAACP has actively opposed lynching. In the victory of Moore v. Dempsey in 1923, NAACP successfully brought the Supreme Court’s intervention into criminal activities in the state.

The significance of this victory is no less than that of other more famous cases, because it laid the foundation for these cases. This victory also provided guidance for the further actions of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Through accumulating experience, NAACP began to better understand the legal system and more strategically strive for equal rights for people of color in court. The victory in the court made it easier for NAACP to obtain financial support. As a result, a legal defense fund was created and became a reliable source for subsequent school segregation campaigns. Francis pointed out that the biggest problem with American civil rights status is political indifference and lack of an honest and fair judicial system.

Francis also talked about path dependence theory, which is an interesting explanation for the development of NAACP. Similar to inertia in physics, entering a certain path will increase the object's dependence on the path. As a result, this road becomes stronger in future development. For the positive path starting from winning the case, more and more rewards will make the path more feasible and reliable along the way. This is because of the importance of jurisprudence in the legal system. Once the case is actively resolved for the first time, the rest will naturally reduce friction. The victory also increased NAACP's chances of raising more funds from the people to continue its campaign.

In short, Francis's work provides a new perspective on the development of civil rights in the United States. Different from the traditional view, the latter emphasizes the importance of the federal government and the Supreme Court, while Francis believes that influence is scattered. Change can happen from top to bottom, and NAACP perfectly demonstrates how the influence of a small foundation can extend from a single victory to a positive path. Therefore, the historical and political importance of NAACP cannot be understated. For anyone interested in the development of civil rights in the United States, it is vital to understand the importance of small foundations. Otherwise, it would be impossible to achieve segregation and the subsequent civil rights movement.
