Research Analysis

The study that is explored is Pokemon GO: Healthy or Harmful? by Amy J. Wotring, Jessica Kruger, Joseph A. Dake, Thomas Castor, and Victoria R. Wagner-Greene. Also, it is published by AJPH Perspectives in January, 2017. After reading this paper, it can be easily found that the research question that this paper would like to explore is whether Pokemon GO, a mobile application game, is harmful or healthy.

Just as what has been illustrated in the textbook (Henslin, 2017), an independent variable is an factor that may result in a change while a dependent variable is right the effect that may be caused by the change. In this sense, it can be readily detected that the independent variables will exert impacts on the dependent variable. As for this study, the independent variables are the potential harms and the potential benefits that will be caused by Pokemon GO. Also, the dependent variable of this study is the players of Pokemon GO. As a matter of fact, what the authors would like to explore is whether Pokemon GO, a mobile application game, is harmful or healthy, which can help provide some useful implications as for how to better deal with public health.

In order to justify for their hypothesis, the research method that was used by the authors to gather data is carrying out a survey. As what has been discussed in class (Howell, 2019), survey is finished by asking the subjects questions and then noting down their answers. The more detailed condition is that a local convenience sample survey has been conducted and the sample chosen is 662 adult players. As a matter of fact, those 662 adult players are intercepted in various public locations while they play the game during the past two weeks of July 2016. After carrying out the research, the authors have found that the potential harms of Pokemon GO are the increasing occurrence of traffic accidents resulted in by the distracted drivers and over a quarter of players express that they are likely to play the game while biking (43%), driving (27%), sacrificing sleep to play larger amounts of the game (38%), and walking without paying attention (32%) (Victoria. 2017). Based on this, it is not hard to find that a large majority of people actually become the victims of Pokemon GO. The more detailed condition is that the proportion of players who actually involve themselves in these kinds of behaviors depend on their age. At the same time, the potential benefits brought by Pokemon GO are the increase of physical activity of those players.

Apart from that, Henslin (2017) has specified that “research subjects should generally be informed that they are being studied”. However, what is a pity to say is that this paper has not mentioned whether all the subjects participating in this survey have been informed about this survey before they take part in it, which calls for further improvement in future researches. The second ethical principle that has been mentioned is that this survey should bring no harm to the subjects in any way. Nevertheless, this research seems to fail in this ethical principle as well because the players who play the video game will be confronted with the danger and risk of being involved in a traffic accident.

In addition, Howell (2019) has proposed that sociologists tend to deem that the exogenous factors, forces that occur outside of the individual, will exert impacts on people’s behaviors. When applying this theory to this study, it is obvious to find that sociologists will show interest in the fact that the implications have to be proposed in order that the players can strike a proper balance between playing the video games and other daily activities. In the opposite, the psychologists or biologists hold that what influence people’s behaviors are endogenous factors and those factors can be understood as the forces that occur inside of the individual. Based on this, it is not hard to find that what the psychologists or biologists will be interested toward this study is that the players that are 24 years old or younger are with greater possibility of engaging themselves in those risky behaviors when compared with other older players.

Last but not the least, another different research method that can be used to gather data will be mentioned and it is the experiment, which has been mentioned by Henslin (2017). To put it more specifically, all the 662 adult players have to be divided into the control group and the experiment group. On the one hand, the control group are the players that do not play the video while doing those physical activities. On the other hand, the experiment group are the players that that play the video while doing those physical activities.
