Discobolus is an ancient Greek sculpture created by sculptor Myron, around 450 B.C. the original bronze sculpture has been lost, but various marble copies of the original are kept. Discobolus is a milestone of Greek art and sculpture. The moment of a discus thrower in motion is captured by Discobolus. The beauty, strength demonstrated, and the celebration of life with an eternity of one moment have made it a symbol for the athletic spirit, even in the present day.

Athletic games had more significance in Ancient Greece than it does in the modern world. Although sports trainings were originally associated with the preparation for war, it gradually served for the substitute for war instead. The first Olympic Games were held in Greece in 776 B.C. With a distinctive culture of city states, the promotion of sports effectively created the brotherhood relationship between these city states (Crowther, 1999). In the competition among each other, the chance of war was significantly eliminated and peace was the most important result of the sports events. Under such circumstances, athletes were considered the honored social class in Ancient Greece. Therefore, the purpose of Discobolus was not only to demonstrated the strength and beauty of an individual athlete, or the group of discus throwers alone. Instead, Discobolus represents the entire Ancient Greece and the Greek spirit of friendly competition, sports, and the promotion of peace. Similarly, the Olympic Games in the modern world have inherited the spirit of the Ancient Greek Ones.

In the sculpture which is regarded as the god of athletic sports, a typical pose is used, with the body of the figure curled into an “S” shape. This added to the sense of instability of the sculpture, as if it was to become alive the next moment (Thliveri, 2013). To balance such sense of instability, the sculpture, Myron, has shifted the center of weight to the right foot, with the left toe being addition support. Centered around the head of the thrower, his two arms spread out evenly on each side to form a perfect symmetry. This both agrees with the reality of the sport, and created the varying effect from different angles. Discobolus shows the celebration of the beauty of nudity by the Greek culture. A perfectly healthy and athletic is the pride of human beings, which is also a reflection of divinity. Personally, this sculpture has broken my previous stereotype of not only Greek, but all sculptures being dull and motionless. I consider it to be among the greatest works of sculpture of all times.

There are multiple messages conveyed by the sculpture, through with people can better understand the social conditions back then. It is believed that the sculptor of Discobolus, Myron was an athlete himself (Machado, 2012). The experiences of being an athlete enabled Myron to find more precision in capturing the best moment of motion. Sports events were of great significance in Ancient Greece. There was even the Olympic truce so that people of different city states were able to gather together to cheer for their own athletes. The existence of Discobolus is not only a demonstration of the beauty of the human body, but also a documentation of the Ancient Greek society on its own. It holds both aesthetical and archeological values. Similarly, the function of art in a society is much more than aesthetics values. Art can serve as a demonstration of the characteristics of the society and the people, and even become a symbol for certain spirits or cultures, as Discobolus has.

In conclusion, Discobolus has proved that sports, sports events and athletes were having very important social status in Ancient Greek. On the one hand, the beauty and strength demonstrated from the sculpture are linked to the divinity and the Greek religion. On the other hand, Discobolus is also a symbol for friendly competition, pride, nationalism and the promotion of peace among different city states. Obviously, the second significance is more frequently applied in the modern world.
