I have a great time studying here at UGA except the deficient transit system that I feel a little disappointed. The buses, both "North and South" and Athens' transports are not so convenient to the UGA students due to the unsuitable schedule and relatively single route. In order to help with the problem, UGA must have something to do such as adding more routes to main daily life places and shorten the time between two buses during the rush hour.
The first specific trouble to me of the current transit system is the case that I might be late to my class, missing some important knowledge taught in the class and disturbing the classmates and professors. For example, I have one class in engineering building and I can only take "North and South" to get there. If I miss one bus, I have to wait for 15 more minutes and might be late to the class. Moreover, waiting in the station not only is a waste of time, where I have nothing to do except sit or stand silly and count for the arrival of buses, but also impacts my mood and lowers my passion, leading to the inefficiency of study.
I am unwilling but have to take the bus to go to another building during the rest time. The interval time between two classes is only 15 minutes, and there are so many students in the bus stop to take class. Sometimes I can get up if I am enough lucky. However, most of time, even I can catch the bus, I still cannot get up because of the countless students waiting for the bus in the front of me. Then I am late to my class.
Another reason why this is my biggest source of stress may be the long waiting time and only one route during the weekend. The interval time between two buses during the weekend is 25 minutes that means the average waiting time is 12.5 minutes. Every Sunday, I need to pay extra 12.5 minutes just waiting for the bus if I want to go to another place. What a waste of time! Furthermore, I am fond of sports so I go to Ramsey every day. When it is Game day, I have two choices, going to take a long time to walk to Ramsey or staying at home, since there is no buses run at that day. No bus during Game day makes me mad and breaks my sports schedule.
The school bus arriving no mall or supermarket is another defect of the school transit. I have to take Athens buses, which is less comfortable than school buses, if I want to go to the mall. What’s worse, the bus of Athens transits is once an hour to UGA that I really cannot stand.
Since UGA has the resource and ability to help with the problem to benefit to the students, I offer some suggestions to the school. First, buying more buses and adding more bus routes is necessary and prerequisite. A bus line to malls and supermarkets has to be set for the convenience of shopping. Students would be happy if the "North and South" takes them to other important place such as the State Library or the cinemas. Then UGA should arrange the bus schedule more reasonable and efficient. The number of buses should be increased during the class intervals, and decreased in other time. The school bus transits would be more efficient in this way, and lower the possibility of students being late to class. Third suggestion is that UGA should negotiate with the Athens government to increase the frequency and bus lines to UGA. There is no doubt that the Athens government and transport corporation have the power to do so. The corporation also obtains money from the bus fare.
This change will create benefits not only for me but also for UGA. The large group of students faces the same problem as me. They are late to class, wasting a lot of time due to waiting for bus and getting into trouble in going shopping because the defective transits. Many students of UGA have no cars, so going to the supermarket by bus always wastes their many spare time, almost costing at least 2 hours to buy stuffs in supermarkets or malls. In the meanwhile, the change will help the "North and South" offer better service. As for the Athens bus company, the bus fares are a considerable income because a large number of students would choose the public bus if the bus lines meet their demand.
Yet, the financial department of UGA may oppose the solution because it will cost a large amount of money to buy more buses and decrease the interval time between two buses. The daily spend also increase if buy more buses. Some environmentalists may also say no to the proposal. They believe it would pollute the air, wasting energy, and impact the body health. I think the advantages of the solution outweigh the disadvantages. After all, time is priceless and the solution will save a lot of time for me and for the large group of students. It will be much more convenient for students to go anywhere they want to go and not be disturbed by the transport.
