This I Believe

Value is something like a guider-we all follow it and we tend to do everything with it. As for me, what I believe in is simple and clear. The pursuit of self-worth and the greatest loyalty to people around me is important to me, which guides my interaction with others, influences the way I make decisions and has an impact on how I conduct my life.

The pursuit of self-worth is a core of my values. It needs a vista of what is working on and a clear idea of what is going on. As a Pragmatist, who gladly does fair share to create a civil society, I will do my best to pursue my goal while balance the benefits between individuals and the society.

The greatest loyalty to people around me is also important to me. Sometimes I would feel awkward when I do something against them when it is necessary. As for me, I like to keep good relations with people in life or at work.

The first situation occurred in my junior high school, when I was a leader in my school literature club. Everything was fine while one day my school arranged me to do a project which will do harm to the literature club but benefit someone else. Great pressure was put on me from my school. At that time, I felt nervous and confused. I wondered what I should do and to do or not to do. 

Fortunately, the efforts my teammates made inspired me and motivated me to speak out and act. We did something to show our disagreement protest. Some of my teachers also offered helps to our literature club which made it easier for us to speak out and act. Finally, I communicated with the person who was in charge of the project. The matter finally had a happy ending.

The second situation that my value conflicted with what I were expected to do is on one of my teamwork. Though in most cases I tend to be non-confrontational, I sometimes got into troubles. Basically, I would say that I have team-working spirit and seldom depute with other group members, but in some personal and more emotional occasions, I would be easily misunderstood for my straightness.

At this time, I didn’t speak out tensions with other co-worker due to idea conflicts because it’s not a core of my values, and also the greatest loyalty to people around me is very important to me. Considering the spirit of teamwork, I compromised. I communicated in person with my teammates, and we finally reached an agreement.

As far as I am concerned, the behavior I exhibited in the two situations in part 2 supports the values and beliefs I wrote about in part 1. I believe that the pursuit of self-worth and the greatest loyalty to people around me is important to me which I typically have done in my practice.

 In situation one, what I have done means I have to pursue my value of being a leader in the school club. I balanced the benefits between the club and the school. I knew the vista of what was working on and a clear idea of what was going on. I did fair share to build a good club.

In situation two, I kept the greatest loyalty to people around me. I make the differences between me and my teammate smaller which helped the team go to a bright future. In case of a dilemma, I did my best to keep good relations with them at work. It satisfied me when what I did obey my values.
