1. Biography of Mary Carbonara

Mary Carbonara is the founder and artistic director of Mary Carbonara Dances and a former member of Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Robert Moses’ Kin, Liss Fain Dance and Project Bandaloop. At present, Carbonara is serving the boards of Robert Moses’ Kin and Dancers’ Group, at the same time, she is a board member of the San Francisco Dance Film Festival.

2. Carbonara’s Contributions to Dance

Since 1988, Mary Carbonara has been devoting herself in the artistic fields of choreography, performing and teaching in Alonzo King Lines Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, ODC School, Shawl Anderson Dance Center, Mills College, San Jose State University, East Carolina University, UC Davis, and around the world, including New York, Chicago, Tallahassee, Tokyo and Kolkata, India. At the same time, she also works as a master or guest teacher at Stanford University and the American College Dance Festival.

Being a qualified teacher, she received her Bachelor’s degree of arts from Barnard College and her Master’s degree of fine arts in performance choreography from Mills College. Outside of specialized fine art education, Carbonara received her teaching and technical training from master teacher Lynn Simonson in New York at the Graham and Cunningham Schools. She was trained by her master teacher for nearly a decade. Rather than that, she is also influenced by several other sources which lead Carbonara to form her own style. In 2001, she founded Mary Carbonara Dances , for which she has created critically acclaimed works since the first day of the company. Her teaching subjects include children, young adults, and adult beginners as well. Meanwhile, she also work to inspire the experienced professionals. Carbonara teaches all levels of modern dance, no matter beginning or advanced or professional levels. To cater to the requirements of children, in 2013, Carbonara initiated Hamster Dance Academy which intends to offer creative movement instruction and dance for children ranging from 3 to 12 years old. In her youth classes, Carbonara is sparked by her decades of training and performing, and the tutoring from her other master instructors Anne Green Gilbert and Sheila Kogan.

In Carbonar’s classes, she offers highly specialized and technical training which aims to maximally explore the potential of every dance practitioner. At the same time, she organically integrates performance, musicality, injury prevention, strength building, as well as healthy keeping together to present beautiful and functional dance styles.

One of her latest well-known works is Alcatraz: Art Behind Bars which was choreographed by Carbonara in 2013. With the support from Stanford University’s Re-Designing Theater program, she performed on the basis of the hospital of the Alcatraz Federal Prison in the San Francisco Bay.
