Character analysis of Portia in Merchant of Venice

Portia is one of the most prominent of Shakespeare's heroines in his mature romantic comedies. She is beautiful, gracious, rich, intelligent, and quick-witted, with high standards for her potential romantic partners. Unfortunately, “so is the will of a living daughter curbed by the will of a dead father.” she said. The one who choose the right casket - the casket containing Portia's portrait - they win Portia's hand in marriage.

Before the scene of choosing casket, the judge Portia made to the five men – the Neapolitan prince, the County Palatine, the French lord, the young baron of England and the Scottish lord – shows her high standards for her partners. In fact, she has already had one ideal husband in her mind. That is Bassanio. 
It seems that she has so many excellent men to choose, but actually, she can only accept the one who open the right casket even though she don’t like him. When the Princes of Morocco and Aragon as well as Bassanio came to make a proposal, Portia showed quite different attitude towards them.
In front of the Morocco prince, Portia was calm and tact. She said, “But if my father had not scanted me and hedged me by his wit, to yield myself his wife who wins me by that means I told you, yourself, renowned prince, then stood as fair as any comer I have look'd on yet for my affection.” Her word implied her despising on the arrogant prince. After the Morocco prince chose the golden one, Portia said, “A gentle riddance. Draw the curtains, go. Let all of his complexion choose me so.” which express her unwilling and tease of his complexion.
When the Aragon prince came, Portia was still elegant and unsparing. Besides explained the rules without emotion, Portia even urged him to hurry up after he opened the casket. “Too long a pause for that which you find there.” as she said.
However, at the moment Bassanio showed up, Portia became a upset, emotional and excited girl. “I pray you, tarry: pause a day or two before you hazard; for, in choosing wrong, I lose your company.” Unlike others princes, Portia didn’t hurry Bassanio to choose the casket or leave as soon as possible. She was so afraid to lose him and she felt pity that she was not allowed to give him any clues to assist in his choice. When Bassanio picked the right casket, Portia was overjoyed and satisfied.
This is the evidence that Portia never resigns herself to her fate. In order to peruse her own happiness and love, she makes use of her wisdom obeyed her father’s will as well as marry with the Mr. Right. It is clearly that Portia was a woman who has the strong female self-conscious. She unwilling to become the slaves of fate, but tried her best to close to her self-ideal.
