What & Why of Christian Ethics

  According to David Jones, ethics is “the study of the way of life that conforms to the will of God”. Christian ethics is a branch of Christian theology that defines concepts of right and wrong behavior from a Christian perspective with an inclusion of three dimensions—goals, persons and practices. 
  What makes Christian ethics distinct is the omnipotence of God and the emphasis on the belief in God. People are required to watch their behaviors strictly following God’s guide and instructions, as is pointed that “so God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” in Old Testament.
  The three dimensions of Christian ethics include goals, persons and practices, respectively corresponding to head, heart, and hand. The three central questions respectively are: What goals should we pursue? What motive of life should be? What practices should we follow? As for the first question, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. As the creator of everything on earth, God is trinitas of Father, Spirit and Son. He sends his son to the world and is the source of powers with which king rules. We are children of wrath and have original sins as well as the missionaries of salvation. The motive of life should be gratitude for God, which will enhance our faith and confidence in God. We should be an obedient kind of person who conforms to will of God. The core of practices is love. Love and faith could only be expressed or presented by actual behaviors. We need to give justice and mercy to others and faithfulness to God. As God’s moral will is revealed in Scripture, we should comply with Scripture. 
  Through the love for God, people are able to love anything or anyone God loves, including people themselves. It is philanthropy that this holistic, multi-dimensional view of ethics advocates. Christian holds a view that love and faith could only be expressed or presented by actual behaviors. And also faith in God is never mere individual contemplation but pertinent to earthly life. It assumes that any faith without practices is meaningless. If a Christian turns his back to other’s pain and torment, he cannot be seen as a believer in God. If a Christian wants to be saved, he must take actions to display his inner belief. Besides, this holistic view of ethics teaches people to make a better decision when they are confronted with moral conflicts. Teeming with ethic principles in their mind and brain, people are likely to urge themselves to practice this moral standard in their daily life. 
  Nowadays, the study of ethics is imperative for Christians, because as a long-established ethic system, it is the fundamental for modern western society and contains a lot of beneficial and positive contents which is conducive to personal development as well as a society or a nation’s. People are more likely to have a better life and the harmony and stability of a nation can be easily achieved. To actively apply these ethics to reality can help solve some troublesome and bothering issues.
