Education is the single largest expenditure for a family and government, higher education, and especially college education takes a significant portion of it. Under the background of popularization of college education at present, there are quite a few problems in our country’s college education. Many people query that whether it is a worthwhile activity for families and governments to spend a large sum of money on college. Graduate students from college do not meet the needs of the society. In addition, college graduates are experiencing trouble landing decent jobs and that the financial return of the investment of college education seems to be declining.
I think that college expenditure is worthwhile, because postsecondary education is a valuable investment in human capital that has beneficial outcomes for individuals as well as for society at large. Everything taught at the public expense should have a direct, practical application that will benefit society and the economy. Colleges teach students to think – to process information and to distinguish between what is important and unimportant, true and untrue. Above all, a country in which academic research and intelligent ideas are allowed to flourish is clearly a much more interesting, stimulating and enjoyable place than one without such “ornament”. This paper will probe into the influential factors of people’s impressions on today’s higher education, and analyze concretely whether it is worthwhile for individuals and the government to invest in it.
