Art Transcends Limitations

Imagine you are Chinese and enjoying a concert of Richard Wagner and simply know the rhythm and the note of music except the history of Richard Wagner as well as the inspirational meaning of his music, will you be provoked by this concert and recall the creation of Hitler? Then, imagine you are reading the fiction written by Salmon Rushdie. The beautiful sentences and graceful circumstances he set in this fiction are attracting and significant, and you have no belief on Muslim, will you be irritated by the emotion and discrimination expressed by Salmon? If you are enjoying a photograph which has some details related to sex, in what kind of places you will feel uncomfortable, at bars or walking through a gallery accompanied by scholars? Art is art itself and can transcend history, territory and religion, thus the freedom of  expression can be protected. It has no mission to comply with morality, which is confined to human. Sometimes, even the viewer of art can make an influential impact on the interpretation of art.

Art is so powerful and tough to overcome time and space, not to mention history and nation. It can last through ages and be appreciated by people from various nations. When one enjoys music played by Richard Wagner, what one should focus on is music itself, including the melody, the rhythm and the note. Unfortunately, the idea he expressed was interpreted, even tortured by history, especially when at the century of Nazi and Hitler. However, if one is merely talking about art, it is brilliant. We cannot mix art with politics and history. Richard Wagner’s music should only be reduced to art with nothing else. Some countries reject and demonstrate the display of Richard’s music, especially in Israel and anti-Nazism nations, and of course people here should be respected, because they are influenced and hurt by history and should keep loyalty to their nations. And we have to admit that Wagner's music arouses deep emotions and listeners feel strongly as long as it disturbs anyone who associates it with the Nazis, with his own or his family's suffering in the Holocaust, Wagner's music may not be played publicly from this respect. The function of music, however, is to clean, to make the listener feel relaxed, to stimulate and pacify one’s soul. Whoever wants to hear Wagner's music can listen to it in private and it does not influence morality at all. In other words, it does not mean the composer should be reduced around the world. This person can be nicely separated from his work. And the composer himself was not a disclaimer of morals. The consequences of his work are overly interpreted by his followers, not him. The history and his country explain and enjoy his work on their behalf and may has no relation to Wagner himself. Nations like China or other countries can accept him and his music. Lily Eylon explained that the entire argument about playing Wagner in Israel does not, in reality, stress on the quality of his music. The question is whether Wagner's music is of high or low quality and can evoke emotions, not the argument about how deep-seated was his anti-semitism really relevant. The original intention of Richard Wagner was not to influence Hitler and push Nazis. He was merely creating a world of music and expressed deep emotions. It are the history and politics that transform it to be a tool of Hitler and if we ignore the history and separate his work from Germany, his music can be enjoyed better. For most people out of Europe, they do not mention the music, and they still do not feel deeply moved, overwhelmed or delighted. For them, it's just music. If Wagner was not born in that era or that place, his work could still be remembered because of talents, and he could bear more applause without Hitler.
In addition to history, art could transcend belief and religion as long as it is reasonable and results in no harm to others. Art is committed to express itself freely within a reasonable circumstance and let people feel delighted, moved or even irritated. The purpose of art is to express beauty and in this field it may work freely within limitations. Here I personally enjoy the extreme views of Sully Proudhon who complied with the formula, "art for art's sake" in its entireness. For him, art was the mere purveyor of sensuous pleasure. Religion, art, morality influence each other but also are independent from each other. Only when they keep high level of independence, a better balance can be reached. As for the work of Salmon Rushdie, even though his work was full of contents against Muslim and some people could taste a kind of racism, in terms of his words and expressions, it is a masterpiece if we ignore religion and belief. In addition, art should be enjoyed by the world and religion which almost intervenes this appreciation can be left when it comes to art, thus, a comprehensive and deep understanding of work can be obtained. Moreover, art based on religion can sometimes be confusing, especially when several kinds of religions are encountering. A catholic is with no doubt different from a Muslim person when referring to food and clothing, not to mention art, something demonstrates one’s life and even soul.
The viewer of this aesthetic show is also important: the audience , the listener and the reader. What kind of intention the viewer takes to the display counts a lot. For instance, when the reader holds an artistic view to enjoy a nude portrait or a painting with sex, it is the detail and deep emotion convey through the work that inspires the person. At that moment, he ignores the naked lady, only focusing on art itself. Thus, it is reasonable for people like him to enjoy such a picture. To some extent, art which cannot be accepted by normal people could innovates the development of society. Art and Sex in the New York Waterfront is the first museum exhibition to focus exclusively on the uses of the Hudson River docks by artists and a newly emerging gay subculture.  It demonstrates how the gay liberation movement, spurred by the 1969 Stonewall riots, transformed the cultural and social landscape of New York. Between 1971 and 1983, the piers were the site of an enormous range of works by artists as different in intention and medium as Vito Acconci and Peter Hujar, Shelley Seccombe and Ivan Galietti, and Gordon Matta-Clark and Tava. Moreover, art with controversial facts can also make positive effect on society. As we know, the gay subculture is full of discussion and lacks recognition but the exhibition played in New York evokes the thought on gay and it also recalls the development of gay acceptance. And at last, the age of the character also counts a lot. When the girl in a photo is 15 years old, people will have a more moral attitude toward it compared with a girl who is 30 years old, for younger one is considered to be more vulnerable and needs protection than others. The degree of perception and pleasure can be largely influenced by the viewer, when the viewer is of high educational level or people full of aesthetic sense, his acceptance could be tolerable while a lower one cannot sustain so-called immoral art. In fact, the change of viewer, to some extent, has a great impact on the appreciation of art.

Our nature is closely related to art, being shaped, mould and tortured by it. And art is closely related to morality, a valuable art usually affects its moral sense. However, art should not merely be under the limitation of morality and it has its world and life, in other words, it can be largely independent from morality, even transcends it. Confined to history, territory, religion and the viewer, people set loads of obstacles to their nature. Once people overcome these limitations, they can find an appropriate balance between art and morality. Admittedly, a good sense of morality can make art much better understood and adopted, thus entertain deep value; however, when elements like history, religion and the viewer of art are left at home, a pure and aesthetic appreciation can impress people more. Art itself has no mission to go with morality, it is used to clean our heart and broaden our horizon, making people saturated in a world full of beauty, and that is its final aim. Overly influenced by outer elements can only make art dim.
